The 1993 NPPL San Diego Open, identified in contemporary reporting as the San Diego Great Western Open, was a planned paintball tournament in San Diego, California. It was intended to open the inaugural season of the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL), but was cancelled following heavy rain and flooding.[1][2]

Planned season opener

[edit]

The San Diego Great Western Open was the first event in the NPPL's original 1993 programme. A contemporary notice in the June 1993 issue of Action Pursuit Games explicitly identified it as the league's intended inaugural tournament.[1]

The NPPL introduced a national structure in which independent promoters organised sanctioned tournaments under common league standards. WARPIG's later account of the original league describes a team-owned organisation that regulated tournament rules, prices and paint policies through its sanctioning arrangements.[3]

Cancellation

[edit]

Action Pursuit Games reported that drought-ending rains had washed out the San Diego event. Paintball Win Count's historical index likewise records the planned tournament as cancelled because of flooding.[1][2]

The cancellation prevented San Diego from becoming the first completed NPPL tournament. The league subsequently began competition with the Dallas Open, held on 26–28 March 1993.[4]

The contemporary schedule notice stated that the five remaining events were proceeding as planned. It listed Dallas, the Boston Cup, the Chicago Cup, the World Cup and the Great Western Reno tournament, with Reno scheduled for October.[1]
