1993 NPPL Reno Open
The 1993 NPPL Reno Open was a paintball tournament held at Northstar Resort in the Lake Tahoe area of California. Part of the Great Western Pro/Am Series, it was sanctioned by the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) and advertised for 9–11 October 1993.[1][2]
The event included professional and amateur 10-man competition and a limited-paint five-man tournament. The All Americans won professional 10-man, Washington Reign won amateur 10-man, and Eat 'Em Alive won the five-man competition.[2][3]
Organisation
[edit]A contemporary schedule published in Action Pursuit Games identified Russell Maynard's Adventure Quest as the producer. It described Reno as part of the Great Western Pro/Am Series '93 and explicitly confirmed NPPL sanctioning.[1]
The advertised dates covered the Columbus Day weekend, following the World Cup, which was scheduled for September.[1]
Venue and conditions
[edit]The five-man competition took place on wooded mountain terrain at Northstar Resort, approximately 7,000 feet above sea level. A contemporary report described thick undergrowth, large cedar trees and sloping ground.[2]
Two fields were used for five-man play. The larger upper field covered approximately an acre. The report described clear, cool conditions on the opening day, rain and mist during the second day, and clearer conditions for Monday's finals.[2]
Five-man competition
[edit]Sixteen teams from California, Nevada, Washington and Canada entered the five-man tournament. Players were limited to 100 paintballs each per game, with a centre-flag objective and a ten-minute time limit.[2]
Teams initially played in two divisions, followed by competition between the divisions. The leading four teams after two days advanced to the final round.[2]
Viper Venom led the preliminary standings with 898 points, followed by Technicolor Assassins with 804, Eat 'Em Alive with 766 and Viper Poison with 757.[2]
Final round
[edit]Eat 'Em Alive defeated Technicolor Assassins 100–0, lost to Viper Venom 0–100, and beat Viper Poison 34–24. Its final total of 234 points secured first place ahead of Technicolor Assassins.[2]
Constant Pursuit and the California Black Diamonds supplied the five-man refereeing staff. The report listed prizes including paintball markers, loaders, gift certificates, accessories and trophies.[2]
