Updated the existing Kamo Karzi article and consolidated the New Zealand variants Kamo Karzi, Kamo Kazi, Kamo Karzis, Kamokarzi, Kamo and KK under the same team identity. Removed the unsupported description of the team as Auckland-based. Retained the official formation history, 1997 league championship, Nationals results, Valhalla rankings and documented personnel. Added the team’s missing 2003 Queen’s Birthday appearance, the contemporary report of its disbandment after that event and the repor

=== Formation and early competition ===

The team's website, preserved in a snapshot dated '''4 February 1998''', states that Kamo Karzi formed around '''1994''' after users of two bulletin board systems organised a social paintball game. Regular social games subsequently provided a route for new members to join.[1]
Kamo Karzi's official website states that the team formed around 1994 after users of two bulletin-board systems organised a social paintball game. The team continued organising social games, through which several later members joined.[1]

Kamo Karzi's first tournament was the '''1994 Winter League''' run by Tactics Paintball. The team received the '''Most Improved''' trophy but did not achieve a placing.[1]
Its first recorded tournament was the 1994 Winter League organised by Tactics Paintball. Kamo Karzi received the Most Improved trophy but did not record a placing.[1]

In '''1995''', Kamo Karzi competed at the Taupō Nationals with sponsorship from '''RP Scherer''' and finished fourth.[1]
In 1995, the team competed at the Taupō Nationals with support from RP Scherer and finished fourth. Its contemporary history states that five regular players, including the captain, subsequently left for another team. The remaining group spent approximately a year rebuilding. An original member known as Wolf became captain in 1995.[1]

The team subsequently lost five regular players, including its captain, to another team. Its website described a rebuilding period of approximately a year. '''Wolf''', an original member from 1994, became captain in 1995.[1]

=== 1997 season ===
Kamo Karzi entered and won the Second Division of the National Paintball League in 1997 with support from Combat Vision.[1]

With sponsorship from '''Combat Vision''', Kamo Karzi entered and won the Second Division of the National Paintball League in '''1997'''.[1]
At the New Zealand Nationals on 25–26 October 1997 at Actions Paintball in Te Atatū, Kamo Karzi scored 818 points. It finished third overall and first in Division Two. Allan Gatland was identified as captain when he accepted the divisional trophy.[2]

At the '''25–26 October 1997 Nationals''' at Actions Paintball in Te Atatū, Kamo Karzi scored '''818 points''', finishing '''third overall and first in Division Two'''. These were separate achievements from its season-long league title.[2]
The league championship and Nationals result were separate achievements. Kamo Karzi also finished third in the retrospectively compiled 1997 Valhalla rankings, with a ranking score of 74.[3]

Rob Maddox's tournament report explicitly identifies '''Allan Gatland''' as captain when he accepted the divisional trophy.[2]
=== 1998–2001 ===

Kamo Karzi also placed third in the retrospectively compiled 1997 Valhalla rankings, with a ranking score of 74. This was distinct from its Nationals placing and tournament points.[12]
The 1998 National Paintball League Division Two team list named Allan Gatland as manager of ''Kamo Karzi 2''. Separate results recorded 16 league points for ''Kamo Karzi #2'', without giving a final placing.[8][9]

=== 1998–2000 ===
At the 1998 New Zealand Nationals, Kamo Karzi finished eleventh with 435 points. The tournament report identifies the captain as ''Alan Gatland'', preserving that source's spelling.[10]

The '''8 March 1998''' NPL Division Two team list names '''Allan Gatland''' as manager of '''Kamo Karzi 2'''. The separately published league results record 16 points for Kamo Karzi #2, without assigning it a placing.[7][8]
Kamo Karzi supplied most of the referees for the 1999 Nationals instead of entering as a playing team. Marty Kinny was the head marshal.[11]

At the '''24–25 October 1998 Nationals''', Kamo Karzi finished '''eleventh with 435 points'''. The report identifies its captain as '''Alan Gatland''', using that spelling.[3]
At the 2000 Nationals, Kamo Karzi competed in the First Division, scoring 515 preliminary points and not advancing to the divisional finals.[12]

Kamo Karzi supplied most of the referees for the '''1999 Nationals''', rather than entering as a playing team. '''Marty Kinny''' was head marshal.[4]
At the 2001 Nationals, the team recorded 665 preliminary points and did not reach the finals. A player identified only as Dazz, described as formerly of Saints, received the second day's player award.[13]

At the '''21–22 October 2000 Nationals''', Kamo Karzi competed in the First Division, recording '''515 preliminary points''' and not advancing to the divisional finals.[5]
=== 2002–2003 ===

=== 2001–2002 ===
Kamo Karzi and Phantom provided referees for the 2002 Northland Open. The team was not listed among the eight playing entries.[14]

At the '''2001 Nationals''', Kamo Karzi recorded '''665 preliminary points''' and did not reach the divisional finals. Team member '''“Dazz”''', described as formerly of Saints, received the second day's player award.[6]
Kamo Karzi returned as a playing team at the 2003 Auckland Queen's Birthday Superball. It scored 341 points in the preliminary round and did not reach the four-team finals.[15]

A team history page preserved in '''February 2002''' recalls Kamo Karzi's development from social paintball into tournament competition and its refereeing contribution at the 1999 Nationals. It names '''Rob Maddox''' as the team's contact.[9]
The contemporary report described Kamo Karzi's final preliminary game, against Katipo, as its last tournament game as a cohesive team. It reported that the team was disbanding after approximately ten years because of player shortages and other commitments. Rob Maddox and Kerry Munro were identified as the remaining players seeking places with other teams.[15]

At the '''2002 Northland Open''', Kamo Karzi and Phantom provided referees for the eight-team tournament. Kamo Karzi was not one of the playing entries listed in the report.[10]
The same report described the newly formed Raiderz, printed there as ''Raiders'', as being composed primarily of former Kamo Karzi players. This establishes a player connection but does not make Raiderz an alias or direct continuation of Kamo Karzi.[15]

The capture dates of the undated profiles do not establish when the answers were written or that the stated roles remained current on those dates.
Rob Maddox's identification as the team's contact in a 2002 capture does not establish that he was captain at that time.[18]

The sources disagree about '''Spider's joining date''': the team page gives '''early 1997''', while Paul McKay's individual profile gives '''1996'''. Both accounts identify his involvement in the 1997 campaign, but the precise joining date remains unresolved.[1][19]

Rob Maddox's identification as team contact in 2002 does not establish that he was captain.[9]

=== Retrospective photographic identifications ===
The sources disagree about Paul McKay's joining date: the official team page gives early 1997, while McKay's individual profile gives 1996. Both sources connect him with the 1997 campaign, but the exact joining date remains unresolved.[1][16]

A historical team photograph published by the '''House Steiner''' Facebook profile contains tags identifying '''James Keogan''' and '''Wayne Carkeek'''. In a comment, Carkeek recalled retaining his Kamo Karzi badges and a speedball shirt numbered 3. The photograph was uploaded on '''23 August 2011'''; its original date is unconfirmed.[21]
== Team names and squads ==

A separate team photograph published by '''Chris Hale''' on '''8 April 2008''' contains tags identifying '''Simon Galt''' and '''Jason Cleeton'''. Comments associate the photograph with Kamo Karzi and retrospectively identify the occasion as Rotorua.[22]
New Zealand sources use several renderings of the team's name, including ''Kamo Karzi'', ''Kamo Kazi'', ''Kamo Karzis'', ''Kamokarzi'', ''Kamo'' and ''KK''. These are treated as spelling or shorthand variants of the same team when the New Zealand context is clear.

In comments on another playing photograph, uploaded by Hale on '''25 March 2008''', [[Kyn Jackson]] identifies '''Kerri''' as '''“Quad”''', '''Paul''' as '''“Spider”''', and '''Rob Maddox'''. The separate contemporary profile identifies Paul “Spider” McKay, but the photographic comments do not establish Kerri's surname.[19][23]
The entries ''Kamo Karzi 2'', ''Kamo Karzi #2'', ''Kamo Karzi Team One'' and ''Kamo Karzi Team Two'' identify event or league squads associated with Kamo Karzi rather than separate permanent team histories.[8][9]

These are retrospective identifications. The upload dates are not established dates of team membership or of the photographed events.[21][22][23]

Sources: Mercenaries Star's Valhalla standings.[12][13][14][15][16]
Valhalla ranking scores were calculated ranking values rather than raw tournament points. The calculation method and categories changed during the period, so the seasonal figures are not directly comparable.[7][19]

The 2001 standings are dated October. Kamo Karzi's recorded contributions were '''63.9''' ranking points from the opening round of RotoVegas and '''47.5''' from the opening round of the Nationals.[16]

These cumulative 2001 values are not directly comparable with the averaged scores used in earlier seasons. Valhalla ranking scores are calculated values, separate from raw tournament points and individual tournament placings.[16][17]

Kamo Karzi, also recorded as Kamo Kazi, Kamo Karzis, Kamokarzi, Kamo and KK, was a New Zealand paintball team formed around 1994. The team combined social and tournament paintball, won the 1997 National Paintball League Second Division and finished third overall and first in Division Two at the 1997 New Zealand Paintball Nationals.[1][2]

Kamo Karzi competed in national events through 2003 and appeared in the Valhalla National Rankings for five consecutive seasons from 1997 to 2001.[3][4][5][6][7]

History

Formation and early competition

Kamo Karzi's official website states that the team formed around 1994 after users of two bulletin-board systems organised a social paintball game. The team continued organising social games, through which several later members joined.[1]

Its first recorded tournament was the 1994 Winter League organised by Tactics Paintball. Kamo Karzi received the Most Improved trophy but did not record a placing.[1]

1997 season

Kamo Karzi entered and won the Second Division of the National Paintball League in 1997 with support from Combat Vision.[1]

At the New Zealand Nationals on 25–26 October 1997 at Actions Paintball in Te Atatū, Kamo Karzi scored 818 points. It finished third overall and first in Division Two. Allan Gatland was identified as captain when he accepted the divisional trophy.[2]

The league championship and Nationals result were separate achievements. Kamo Karzi also finished third in the retrospectively compiled 1997 Valhalla rankings, with a ranking score of 74.[3]

1998–2001

The 1998 National Paintball League Division Two team list named Allan Gatland as manager of Kamo Karzi 2. Separate results recorded 16 league points for Kamo Karzi #2, without giving a final placing.[8][9]

At the 1998 New Zealand Nationals, Kamo Karzi finished eleventh with 435 points. The tournament report identifies the captain as Alan Gatland, preserving that source's spelling.[10]

Kamo Karzi supplied most of the referees for the 1999 Nationals instead of entering as a playing team. Marty Kinny was the head marshal.[11]

At the 2000 Nationals, Kamo Karzi competed in the First Division, scoring 515 preliminary points and not advancing to the divisional finals.[12]

At the 2001 Nationals, the team recorded 665 preliminary points and did not reach the finals. A player identified only as Dazz, described as formerly of Saints, received the second day's player award.[13]

2002–2003

Kamo Karzi and Phantom provided referees for the 2002 Northland Open. The team was not listed among the eight playing entries.[14]

Kamo Karzi returned as a playing team at the 2003 Auckland Queen's Birthday Superball. It scored 341 points in the preliminary round and did not reach the four-team finals.[15]

The same report described the newly formed Raiderz, printed there as Raiders, as being composed primarily of former Kamo Karzi players. This establishes a player connection but does not make Raiderz an alias or direct continuation of Kamo Karzi.[15]

Members and team roles

Official 1998 team list

The team's archived website identified the following members. It explicitly described the list as incomplete, and it should not be treated as the roster for every event.[1]

Published name Documented involvement
Wolf Original member from 1994; captain from 1995
Psyg' / Rob Maddox Joined in 1994 after his previous team, The Goodies, broke up; team media contact
Quad Joined in 1995
Spider Team website records an early-1997 joining date; a separate profile identifies him as Paul “Spider” McKay and gives 1996
BJ Joined in early 1997 after attending a social game
Daemon Joined in late 1996
Hobbit Member from the team's formation; social player and tournament pit support
Frigg Team manager; joined in late 1995
Balder Joined in late 1995 and played tournament paintball

Other documented personnel

Name Documented association
Allan Gatland Captain at the 1997 Nationals; manager of Kamo Karzi 2 in 1998[2][8]
Paul “Spider” McKay Member who recalled joining in 1996 and playing in the 1997 league-winning campaign[16]
Jo Pitts Former Kamo Karzi member who subsequently played for Saints; previously associated with NSS[17]
Dazz Player at the 2001 Nationals; formerly of Saints[13]
Kerry Munro Identified with Rob Maddox as a remaining player when the team disbanded in 2003[15]

Rob Maddox's identification as the team's contact in a 2002 capture does not establish that he was captain at that time.[18]

The sources disagree about Paul McKay's joining date: the official team page gives early 1997, while McKay's individual profile gives 1996. Both sources connect him with the 1997 campaign, but the exact joining date remains unresolved.[1][16]

Team names and squads

New Zealand sources use several renderings of the team's name, including Kamo Karzi, Kamo Kazi, Kamo Karzis, Kamokarzi, Kamo and KK. These are treated as spelling or shorthand variants of the same team when the New Zealand context is clear.

The entries Kamo Karzi 2, Kamo Karzi #2, Kamo Karzi Team One and Kamo Karzi Team Two identify event or league squads associated with Kamo Karzi rather than separate permanent team histories.[8][9]

Tournament results

Year Tournament or series Recorded result

National rankings

Season Ranking category Position Ranking score
1997 Combined 3rd 74[3]
1998 Combined 9th 43[4]
1999 Combined 9th 63[5]
2000 Combined 18th 59[6]
2001 Seven-player 10th 111.4[7]

Valhalla ranking scores were calculated ranking values rather than raw tournament points. The calculation method and categories changed during the period, so the seasonal figures are not directly comparable.[7][19]
