Ralph Tsing is a competitive paintball player from French Polynesia, known for his international tournament career and involvement in the development of competitive paintball in Tahiti.

Tsing has competed in Asia, Oceania and Europe, representing Tahitian teams including Phoenix Tahiti and playing with established overseas teams such as Manawatu Titans, Expendables and Sydney SWAT.

In October 2022, he was named the best player at the Super 7's Paintball Series Planet Eclipse Open in Sydney, Australia, while competing with the New Zealand professional team Manawatu Titans. [1]

Tsing has also received support from Air Tahiti Nui through its sporting ambassador programme, which has documented his international competition activities. [2]

Paintball career

[edit]

Early career in French Polynesia

[edit]

Tsing developed his competitive paintball career in French Polynesia, where organised speedball competitions were held through local clubs and associations.

He became associated with Phoenix Tahiti, a competitive team established in 2009 to bring together players from different Tahitian teams.

Surviving identification cards from a local paintball event in 2012 identify Tsing as a registered competitor with Papara Paintball.

The cards carry Fédération de Paintball branding and document organised local participation during this period.

Tsing subsequently became one of the most extensively documented Tahitian players competing internationally.

His tournament career included appearances for Tahitian representative squads as well as invitations to play for established teams in New Zealand and Australia.

World Cup Asia 2011

[edit]

Tsing competed at the 2011 Paintball World Cup Asia, held from 10 to 13 November in Langkawi, Malaysia.

He participated with a Tahitian squad identified as Fei Pi 1923 in the original Paintball Asia League Series rankings.

The team also appeared under the name Team Fei-Pi-Tahiti in a pre-tournament announcement published by PALS International Liaison Director Allan Phang on 24 September 2011. [3]

Fei Pi 1923 competed in Division 1, finishing 19th among 21 teams at World Cup Asia.

The squad subsequently placed 22nd in the overall 2011 PALS Division 1 season rankings. [4]

The appearance represents one of Tsing's earliest documented international tournaments.

Tahitian Legion, New Zealand 2012

[edit]

In 2012, Tsing competed at Event 2 of the New Zealand Paintball Players League season in Hāwera, Taranaki, New Zealand.

He played for a Tahitian squad known as Tahitian Legion.

The team appeared simply as Tahiti on the original handwritten tournament scoreboard.

Contemporary photographs identify Tsing wearing jersey number 27.

The scoreboard records Tahiti finishing the initial seven scoring rounds in fourth position with 329 points.

The squad was scheduled to face Tiger Blood in the third-place playoff, although the final result has not been independently established. [5]

The appearance marked an early documented stage of Tsing's competitive involvement in New Zealand.

World Cup Asia 2012

[edit]

Tsing returned to Langkawi for the 2012 Paintball World Cup Asia.

He competed in Division 2 with Phoenix Authority, a multinational squad associated with Tahitian competitive paintball.

A contemporary article in La Dépêche de Tahiti, titled "Une honorable 17e place", identified Tsing as a member of the team. [6]

The team had been assembled with international players because a complete Tahitian squad was unavailable.

Phoenix Authority finished 17th among 28 teams in Division 2.

The original preliminary scoreboards recorded the squad finishing with 2.5 competition points, nine sets won and 12 sets lost.

World Cup Asia 2013

[edit]

Tsing participated in the 2013 NAZA World Cup Asia in Langkawi, Malaysia, competing under the Phoenix Tahiti name.

The team entered Division 3 with a six-player multinational roster.

Phoenix Tahiti finished 47th among 54 teams in Division 3, as confirmed by both the original PALS standings and PBLeagues. [7]

The team's overall 2013 PALS Division 3 season ranking was 57th among 65 listed teams.

Tsing's appearance represented a continuation of his participation in the Asian tournament circuit.

International competition during the 2010s

[edit]

Tsing continued participating in overseas paintball competitions throughout the following years.

His sporting activities received recognition through private sponsorship and local media coverage.

A 2016 Tahiti Infos article about sporting sponsors Jeffry and Priscille Yersin identified Tsing among the athletes they supported. [8]

Tsing also maintained connections with international paintball players and teams, particularly in New Zealand, Australia and Southeast Asia.

These relationships helped facilitate participation in tournaments outside French Polynesia.

World Cup Asia 2017

[edit]

In November 2017, Tsing competed at World Cup Asia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He participated in a combined Tahitian and Malaysian team under the Phoenix Tahiti name, also registered as Phoenix Tahiti Aisawan.

The team competed in Division 3 and finished fifth among 16 entrants.

Phoenix Tahiti placed second in its preliminary group and subsequently finished first in its second-round group.

The team reached the quarterfinals, where it was eliminated by Order 66 following a two-set-to-one defeat.

The result received coverage in La Dépêche de Tahiti on 15 November 2017. [9]

The newspaper reported that financial limitations had prevented a full Tahitian squad from travelling to Malaysia.

The Tahitian participants therefore competed alongside Malaysian players.

Tsing described the fifth-place result as satisfying because the combined team had not previously trained together.

Competition in New Zealand

[edit]

Manawatu Titans

[edit]

Tsing has represented the New Zealand competitive paintball team Manawatu Titans, including guest appearances in New Zealand and Australia.

In an October 2022 interview with Tahiti Infos, he explained that he had previously joined the team for a round of a New Zealand championship in 2020. [1]

According to Tsing, Manawatu Titans finished first at that event.

The specific tournament and complete official standings have not yet been independently established.

His connection with the team subsequently led to an invitation to compete in Australia's professional paintball division.

Expendables and the New Zealand Race Series 2023

[edit]

In 2023, Tsing competed for Expendables in the New Zealand Race Series.

He participated in the opening round of the competition in Auckland in April 2023.

Seven teams entered the event, which was contested under a semiprofessional race format.

Tsing finished third with Expendables.

The result was documented in a Tahiti Nui Télévision report published on 20 April 2023. [10]

Tsing also participated with Expendables in the second round of the 2023 series.

An October 2023 interview with Air Tahiti Nui confirmed that he had represented Expendables in the first two rounds before returning to the Phoenix Tahiti name for the final round. [2]

Expendables subsequently won both the final event and the overall championship.

Phoenix Tahiti at the New Zealand Race Series 2023

[edit]

For the final round of the 2023 New Zealand Race Series, Tsing assembled a squad under the Phoenix Tahiti name.

The competition took place at Arena Paintball in Feilding, New Zealand, in October 2023.

According to an interview published by Air Tahiti Nui, Tsing assembled the team at the invitation of event organiser David Hopkins. [2]

The event attracted nine teams.

Phoenix Tahiti completed the preliminary stage with six wins, one draw and one defeat.

The team reached the semifinals against Ballistics Unit.

After trailing 2-0, Phoenix Tahiti recovered to lead 3-2 before the match finished 3-3 in regulation time.

Ballistics Unit won the sudden-death point, eliminating Phoenix Tahiti from championship contention.

Phoenix Tahiti subsequently won the third-place playoff against the Charcharodons, 3-0.

The team finished third overall.

In the October 2023 interview, Tsing reported having achieved five podium finishes in five tournaments during the year up to that point.

The individual results of all five tournaments have not yet been independently reconstructed.

Competition in Australia

[edit]

Super 7's Planet Eclipse Open 2022

[edit]

In October 2022, Tsing travelled to Sydney, Australia, to compete in the Super 7's Paintball Series Planet Eclipse Open.

The competition was the third round of the Australian Super 7's season.

Tsing joined the New Zealand professional team Manawatu Titans after receiving an invitation on 8 September 2022.

The appearance was his first competition in the Australian professional division. [1]

Nine teams entered the tournament.

Manawatu Titans completed the preliminary stage with six wins and two draws, qualifying second for the semifinals.

The team faced Sydney SWAT in the semifinals.

After a closely contested match, Manawatu Titans lost 4-3 in overtime.

The team subsequently faced Eastside Raw in the third-place playoff, again losing 4-3.

Manawatu Titans finished fourth overall.

Despite the team's fourth-place finish, Tsing was named the tournament's best player.

The individual award was reported by Tahiti Infos on 10 October 2022. [1]

The achievement was notable because Tsing had been unable to train regularly in Tahiti following the loss of access to a local practice field.

In the interview, he expressed an ambition to continue participating in the Australian professional paintball circuit.

International competition during 2023

[edit]

Tsing continued travelling internationally during 2023, including further competition in Australia.

A Tahiti Nui Télévision report published in April 2023 referred to an Australian tournament scheduled for Sydney in May. [10]

In an October interview with Air Tahiti Nui, Tsing reported that he had one remaining Australian competition scheduled for November. [2]

The results of these individual Australian tournament appearances have not all been independently established.

Sydney SWAT

[edit]

Tsing subsequently became associated with Sydney SWAT, an Australian competitive paintball team participating in the Super 7's Paintball Series.

In August 2024, Tahiti Nui Télévision identified Tsing as a Sydney SWAT player in a report examining the lack of sporting infrastructure in French Polynesia. [11]

This provides independent evidence of his association with the team by that date.

The exact date of his first appearance for Sydney SWAT and his complete tournament results with the squad have not yet been established.

His association with Sydney SWAT followed his earlier appearance against the team during the 2022 Super 7's Planet Eclipse Open.

Competition in France

[edit]

French Paintball Championship 2026

[edit]

In June 2026, Tsing travelled to France to participate in the Championnat de France with Phoenix Tahiti.

The event was organised by the Fédération Française de Paintball and held in Dreux, France, from 5 to 7 June 2026. [12]

Tsing's involvement is documented in contemporary social media coverage of the team's appearance, including photographs associated with the championship.

Phoenix Tahiti reported finishing second in its competition. [13]

The result has not yet been matched to a complete official divisional ranking, so the exact division and final match score remain unconfirmed.

The appearance extended Tsing's documented international competition activities to Europe.

Paintball development in French Polynesia

[edit]

Loss of training facilities

[edit]

Tsing has spoken publicly about the difficulties faced by competitive paintball players in French Polynesia.

According to a Tahiti Nui Télévision report published on 30 August 2024, organised paintball in Tahiti previously involved approximately 100 registered players, with the local federation holding four or five championships annually. [11]

In 2012, access to paintball fields in Mahina, Papara, Punaauia and Mataiea was withdrawn.

The loss of these facilities substantially reduced opportunities for organised competitive paintball.

Tsing described the closure of the fields as a major setback for the sport.

Players subsequently used a smaller training area in Punaruu, but access to that site was also lost in 2022.

The resulting shortage of suitable facilities made it difficult for Tahitian players to train regularly.

Tsing continued to participate in international tournaments despite these limitations.

International participation and team development

[edit]

Tsing has played a role in maintaining international opportunities for competitive paintball players from French Polynesia.

His activities have included travelling to tournaments, guesting for overseas teams and organising Tahitian squads for competitions outside the territory.

The 2023 New Zealand Race Series provides one example of his organising activities, with Tsing assembling a Phoenix Tahiti squad for the final round of the championship.

His international competition activities have received coverage in Tahitian media and support through the Air Tahiti Nui sporting ambassador programme.

The continued participation of Tahitian players in international competitions has provided opportunities for competition and development despite limited access to suitable facilities at home.
