Editing 2006 PSP season (section)

== Competition changes ==

=== NXL professional division ===

Previously, the NXL had operated a season-long league culminating in championship play-offs at World Cup. In 2006 it changed to individual professional tournaments, each awarding trophies and prizes. Invitations extended participation beyond the existing franchise teams.[1]

Beginning at the SoCal Open, the NXL discontinued its third-place match. Losing semi-finalists were ranked by their performance through the tournament and received equal prize payments.[6]

=== Divisional X-Ball ===

PSP replaced double-elimination preliminary brackets with group competition, giving teams more guaranteed matches before elimination rounds.[1]

At World Cup, Open competition replaced Division 1, allowing entry by teams classified as Professional, Semi-Pro or Division 1 elsewhere. The contemporary season standings retained the earlier Division 1 results and World Cup Open points in one championship table.[2][8]

=== Five-player X-Ball ===

Five-player X-Ball replaced PSP's traditional five-player tournament format. Competition included Division 3 and Division 4, with additional Division 2 competition at World Cup.[1][2]
