== Playing career == === Early career === Marshall began competing professionally in Southern California during the late 1990s. His early teams included Marine Team and Navarone, before he joined the Southern California Ironmen.[1] Marshall subsequently became associated with the development of professional tournament paintball during the transition from traditional ten-player competition to seven-player airball and X-Ball formats. === Southern California Ironmen === By 2001, Marshall was a member of the Southern California Ironmen, competing alongside Shane Pestana, Oliver Lang, Micah McGlocklin, Yosh Rau, Rich Telford and Billy Wing. Contemporary National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) professional rosters list him under the name Matt Marshall in both 2001 and 2002.[5][6] At the 2002 NPPL Chicago Open, held at Badlandz Paintball Field in Crete, Illinois, Marshall helped the Ironmen win the professional ten-player division. During a decisive final-round match against San Diego Dynasty, Marshall and Telford survived as the Ironmen's final two players, eliminating Dynasty's remaining competitors and securing a victory. The Ironmen finished first in the professional division, ahead of Bob Long's Ironmen, Strange and Dynasty.[7] Marshall also participated in the inaugural professional X-Ball competitions during 2003. At the 2003 PSP Los Angeles Open, contemporary reporting documented him scoring the Ironmen's final point in a match against Chicago Aftershock.[8] === XSV === In 2004, Marshall joined XSV, a professional team established by players departing the Ironmen, Chicago Aftershock and other established organisations. The original XSV line-up included Marshall, Rich Telford, Micah McGlocklin and Nicky Cuba. WARPIG's contemporary coverage of the 2004 NPPL Huntington Beach tournament identified Marshall among the players who had joined the newly formed team.[9] Marshall competed with XSV during the organisation's rise to prominence in professional seven-player competition. He was also involved in the team's early association with Planet Eclipse. In a 2017 retrospective on the launch of the Planet Eclipse Ego, the manufacturer identified Marshall and Telford as prominent professional players whose use of the marker helped establish its credibility in American tournament paintball.[10] XSV subsequently became the subject of the 2007 documentary Heroes for a Day: The XSV Story, which documented the team's efforts to compete against the dominant Dynasty organisation.[11]
