Spaced Invaders (New Zealand Paintball Team)

From WikiPaintball

Spaced Invaders was a paintball team and recreational playing group based in Taupō, New Zealand, documented in 2001. The group developed from recreational play into speedball training and maintained training links with Tag n' Release.[1]

History

[edit]

In a forum introduction dated 9 September 2001, a member posting as ANTSMAN and signing as Ants reported that the group had begun playing recreational paintball around Christmas 2000. Its members began considering a speedball field around February 2001 and subsequently built one after watching a tournament in Rotorua.[1] This account documents the group's early activity but does not establish a formal foundation date.

By September 2001, the group reported nine club members and regular Sunday games, usually held fortnightly and sometimes weekly. Its small, symmetrical speedball field had ten barricades on each side, with further additions planned.[1]

Training and tournament plans

[edit]

The September introduction stated that Spaced Invaders had not yet competed in tournaments and intended to begin competing in 2002. The group invited other teams to Taupō for training and reported that Tag n' Release had already played on its field.[1]

On 10 September, Ants stated that two members intended to play for Tag n' Release's second team at the forthcoming Nationals. This was a statement of intended participation rather than confirmation that they registered or played at the event.[1]

A reply on 2 October thanked the Taupō group for another shared training day. The following day, Ants named Wayne as a fellow prospective traveller to Hastings. The discussion does not provide either person's surname, a complete Spaced Invaders roster or a confirmed tournament result.[1]

No evidence has been found establishing that entries named Space Invaders were spelling variants of this team.
