San Diego Pirates (United States Paintball Team)

From WikiPaintball

San Diego Pirates is an American competitive paintball team based in Encinitas, California. PBLeagues identifies Velocity Paintball in Ramona, California, as the team's home field and records tournament appearances under the related names CP Kids, Golden State Pirates and San Diego Pirates from 2009 to 2022.[1]

History

[edit]

CP Kids and Golden State Pirates

[edit]

The earliest entries grouped within the team's PBLeagues record use the name CP Kids at Southern California events in 2009. The same record uses Golden State Pirates from March 2010 through March 2011.[1] Because PBLeagues presents these entries on the San Diego Pirates' legacy team page, they are treated as earlier identities within the same database record; the available source does not state the date or circumstances of either name change.

Golden State Pirates won the Division 3 five-player competition at the 2010 PSP Phoenix Open, Chicago Open and Mid-Atlantic Open.[1][2][3] The team subsequently placed fifth in Division 3 at the 2010 PSP World Cup.[1]

San Diego Pirates

[edit]

The name San Diego Pirates appears in the PBLeagues record by the 2011 WCPPL season. The team placed second in Division 2 at Cali Jam in October 2011.[1]

San Diego Pirates moved into PSP Division 1 competition in 2012. It won Division 1 at the PSP Galveston Island Open and finished third at the PSP Phoenix Open. The team also competed at the Chicago Open, Mid-Atlantic Open and World Cup, finishing sixth in the 2012 PSP Division 1 season standings with 352.62 points.[1][4]

Brandon Cornell later recalled joining San Diego Pirates for its first PSP campaign when he was 15. Cornell subsequently competed professionally with the Los Angeles Ironmen.[5]

The team continued in PSP Division 1 during 2013 and 2014. Its documented 2014 results included twelfth place at the PSP World Cup.[1]

Regional and NXL competition

[edit]

San Diego Pirates returned to regional Division 2 competition in the WCPPL during 2015. The team won the Camp Pendleton and NorCal Classic rounds that season. It won the 2016 WCPPL Sin City Open and placed third at the Oceanside Showdown.[1]

The team also competed in the Semi-Pro division at the 2016 NXL Las Vegas Open. Later national appearances included the 2017 NXL World Cup and the 2018 NXL Las Vegas and Texas Opens in Division 2.[1]

PBLeagues records San Diego Pirates in WCPPL Premier and ten-player competition during 2021 and 2022, as well as a separate Division 4 entry during 2022. The principal team finished nineteenth in the Open division at both the 2021 and 2022 WCPPL ten-player amateur tournaments.[1][6]

Secondary entries

[edit]

Tournament records also use numbered names including San Diego Pirates III, San Diego Pirates IV and San Diego Pirates V.[7] These are treated as divisional or secondary entries rather than alternative names for the principal team. Their results should not be combined with the principal team's results without an event-specific reason.
