Operation Tet Offensive
Operation Tet Offensive (also promoted as OP Tet Offensive and Tet Offensive) was an American scenario paintball event associated with SC Village, Giant San Diego and the wider Giant Sportz paintball park network in Southern California.
Based on the 1968 Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War, the event featured large-scale woodsball competition between players representing United States forces and opposing North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong forces.
Surviving records document Operation Tet Offensive at SC Village in Chino, California, in 2013 and at Giant San Diego in Lakeside, California, during the later 2010s.[1][2]
History
[edit]SC Village
[edit]Operation Tet Offensive was advertised at SC Village for 29–30 June 2013.
The event appeared in the Tippmann Sports scenario paintball forum, which identified SC Village in Chino, California, as the venue.[1]
SC Village was part of the Southern California paintball park network operated under the Giant Sportz name, which also included Hollywood Sports Park and Giant San Diego.
The earliest edition of Operation Tet Offensive has not been established from the available historical records.
Giant San Diego
[edit]By 2016, Operation Tet Offensive was being held at Giant San Diego Paintball and Airsoft Park in Lakeside, California.
Giant San Diego published event photographs in June 2016, documenting the competition at its Wildcat Canyon Road facility.[2]
In a retrospective published on 20 June 2016, Bear D'Egidio reported that the event attracted more than 200 players.
Participating teams included LA Hitmen, Yuma Rattlers, Magfed Samurai and SAS SoCal, among others.[3]
The event continued at Giant San Diego in 2017.
Video footage published by Bear D'Egidio on 12 June 2017 documented the year's Operation Tet Offensive, including gameplay at the venue.[4]
2018 event
[edit]Operation Tet Offensive returned to Giant San Diego on 14–15 July 2018.
The event was promoted as a two-day scenario paintball competition, with participants choosing between United States forces and the North Vietnamese Army/Viet Cong.[5]
Advance registration cost US$65 and included two days of admission, camping and a case containing 1,600 paintballs.
Organisers advertised more than US$10,000 in prizes and giveaways.[5]
The published Saturday programme included:
- 07:00 – Registration.
- 09:30 – Morning briefing.
- 10:30 – Opening battle.
- 18:00 – Final battle.
Sunday was advertised as a separate Big Game Day.[5]
2019 event
[edit]Operation Tet Offensive was again held at Giant San Diego in 2019.
The park published a photographic album titled TET Offensive 2019 Scenario event, documenting participants at the Lakeside venue.[6]
Contemporary discussion among Southern California paintball players identified Tet Offensive as one of the region's principal large-scale scenario events, alongside Decay of Nations at SC Village.[7]
Game format
[edit]Operation Tet Offensive was based on the historical Tet Offensive launched during the Vietnam War in January 1968.
Players were divided into two opposing forces:
- United States: Representing American military forces.
- North Vietnamese Army/Viet Cong: Representing the opposing North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces.
The 2018 event announcement explicitly identified these two sides and invited participants to compete in a recreation of the historical conflict.[5]
The event used a large-scale scenario format incorporating organised battles over an extended weekend.
Historical editions combined scheduled gameplay, a final battle and additional recreational paintball activities.
Venues
[edit]Operation Tet Offensive is documented at two Southern California paintball facilities.
| Venue | Location | Documented editions |
|---|---|---|
| SC Village | Chino, California | 2013 |
| Giant San Diego | Lakeside, California | 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 |
Both venues were associated with the Giant Sportz network.
The available records establish the use of both venues but do not confirm the precise date or circumstances of the event's relocation.
Participation
[edit]Operation Tet Offensive attracted recreational paintball players and organised scenario teams from Southern California and neighbouring regions.
The 2016 event reportedly attracted more than 200 participants, including established recreational and magazine-fed paintball teams.[3]
The event's military theme encouraged participants to represent opposing historical forces.
Operation Tet Offensive formed part of the wider Southern California scenario paintball scene alongside events such as Decay of Nations.
