M. Carter Brown
M. Carter Brown is an American paintball enthusiast, collector and online community founder best known for establishing M. Carter Brown (MCB), a long-running internet forum dedicated to paintball equipment, collecting, restoration and the sport's history.[1]
Brown established his personal website around the beginning of the 2000s. The site developed into a paintball discussion forum that became particularly associated with vintage markers, pump-action paintball, stock-class equipment and unusual or collectible paintball technology.[1][2]
The MCB community also became involved in recreational paintball events and established Carter's Commando, a group associated with EMR Paintball Park in Pennsylvania.[1]
Brown continued operating the community through several changes in forum software. In July 2020, the original forum infrastructure was compromised in a ransomware attack, after which a replacement forum was established.[1]
The website remains active as of October 2026.[2]

Paintball collecting
[edit]Early involvement
[edit]Brown was active in online paintball communities before establishing his own forum.
A 2021 discussion among longtime MCB members recalled his participation in early internet discussion groups, including rec.sport.paintball and alt.sport.paintball.[1]
The precise dates of his earliest involvement have not been independently established.
Equipment collecting
[edit]Brown developed an interest in acquiring older and unusual paintball markers.
Community recollections describe his interest in equipment that had been desirable during the sport's earlier years but was difficult or expensive to obtain.
Online auctions
[edit]Brown used online auction services, particularly eBay, to locate collectible paintball equipment.
He also shared listings with other enthusiasts.
According to members of the original community, sharing auction listings was one of the activities that encouraged him to develop a dedicated website.[1]
Historical interest
[edit]The collecting community became interested not only in acquiring markers but also in documenting their manufacturers, variations, technical specifications and production history.
These interests became central to the later MCB forum.
Establishment of M. Carter Brown
[edit]Personal website
[edit]Brown established mcarterbrown.com around the beginning of the 2000s.
The website originally included material relating to several of his personal interests.
Paintball became one of its principal subjects.
Earliest archived version
[edit]A community history published in February 2021 identifies 17 February 2001 as the earliest archived version of the website.[1]
The archived site included a reference to a paintball forum, although the discussion community had not yet developed into its later form.
Development of the forum
[edit]Brown established a discussion forum where collectors could share information about paintball equipment.
The forum also provided a place to exchange links to auction listings and discuss unusual markers.
March 2002
[edit]According to the 2021 community history, an archived version of the forum from March 2002 contained approximately 323 posts across 72 discussion threads.[1]
This establishes that a functioning discussion community existed by that date.
Early design
[edit]The original forum became associated with a distinctive salmon-coloured design.
Longtime members subsequently referred to this version as the original or early MCB forum.
December 2003
[edit]The community history identifies a surviving archived forum capture dated 5 December 2003.
This provides evidence of the website's development during its early years.
Growth of the community
[edit]Specialist focus
[edit]MCB developed a reputation as a discussion community for players interested in older paintball equipment.
Its discussions included:
- Vintage markers
- Pump-action markers
- Stock-class paintball
- Mechanical marker maintenance
- Custom equipment
- Marker collecting
- Equipment restoration
- Paintball history
- Buying and selling used equipment
Collector communities
[edit]During the early 2000s, several online communities concentrated on individual marker manufacturers or playing styles.
MCB attracted members from these specialised forums.
A 2021 historical discussion identified earlier communities associated with equipment such as the Brass Eagle Stingray, Sheridan PGP, Rainmaker and CCI Phantom.[1]
Equipment knowledge
[edit]Members contributed technical information about markers that were no longer manufactured.
Discussions included repair procedures, replacement components and identification of uncommon models.
Trading
[edit]The forum developed sections for buying, selling and exchanging paintball equipment.
These became particularly useful to collectors searching for discontinued markers and components.
Community feedback
[edit]MCB incorporated feedback discussions allowing members to document experiences with other buyers and sellers.
These records became part of the community's trading culture.
Forum software changes
[edit]Early software
[edit]The original forum used an earlier web discussion platform.
Archived versions document its development before the introduction of vBulletin.
2006 transition
[edit]In 2006, the website migrated to vBulletin.
According to the 2021 community history, the transition began around March and the replacement forum launched in April.[1]
Membership records
[edit]Members who joined during the transition often retained April 2006 registration dates.
These dates became associated with the forum's earlier generation of users.
Community continuity
[edit]Although the software changed, the website retained its emphasis on paintball collecting, technical discussion and recreational play.
Carter's Commando
[edit]Formation
[edit]The MCB community developed a recreational paintball group known as Carter's Commando.
The group emerged from meetings between forum members at paintball events.
Pumper's Pandemonium
[edit]A 2021 community history identifies Pumper's Pandemonium at EMR Paintball Park in 2004 as an important early gathering.[1]
The event brought together members who previously knew one another primarily through the internet.
Hawaiian shirts
[edit]Members adopted Hawaiian shirts as an informal means of identifying one another at events.
The clothing became associated with Carter's Commando.
EMR Paintball Park
[edit]Carter's Commando developed a longstanding association with EMR Paintball Park in Pennsylvania.
The group attended recreational events and maintained a presence at the park.
Bunkhouse
[edit]The community history describes the group maintaining a bunkhouse arrangement at EMR for several years.
The arrangement ended around 2017 or 2018, although the precise date requires confirmation.
Later activity
[edit]The Carter's Commando section remained present on the MCB forum in 2026.[2]
Relationship with other paintball websites
[edit]Early Usenet communities
[edit]Before dedicated paintball forums became widespread, enthusiasts communicated through Usenet discussion groups.
These included:
Longtime MCB members recalled Brown's involvement in this earlier online environment.[1]
Specialist forums
[edit]The early internet also included discussion groups dedicated to individual manufacturers and marker models.
These communities preserved technical information about equipment.
MCB's role
[edit]MCB brought together collectors and enthusiasts who had previously participated in separate specialist communities.
Its broad equipment focus allowed discussions about different manufacturers and periods of paintball history to coexist on one website.
Relationship with PBNation
[edit]MCB and PBNation developed different community emphases.
PBNation became strongly associated with tournament paintball, professional teams and contemporary equipment.
MCB became particularly associated with older equipment, mechanical markers and collecting.
Both websites formed part of the wider development of online paintball communities.
Preservation of paintball history
[edit]Equipment documentation
[edit]MCB members have contributed to discussions identifying historical markers and their manufacturers.
These discussions are useful for reconstructing the development of equipment that may have limited surviving manufacturer documentation.
Technical knowledge
[edit]The forum preserves information about repairs, modifications and discontinued components.
Photographic records
[edit]Members have shared photographs of collectible markers, custom builds and historical equipment.
Period publications
[edit]The website also hosts digitised historical paintball publications.
These include archived issues of magazines such as:
- Paintball Planet
- The Paintball Trader
The archived publications provide contemporary evidence about the sport's development during the early 1990s.[3][4]
Research value
[edit]The forum is a useful source for researching paintball history, particularly when contemporary manufacturer records are unavailable.
However, individual forum posts may contain recollections, speculation or unverified information.
Historical claims should therefore be compared with original advertisements, tournament reports, patent records and contemporary publications whenever possible.
July 2020 security incident
[edit]Ransomware attack
[edit]In July 2020, the MCB forum experienced a major security incident.
According to the community's 2021 historical account, an attacker compromised the server and demanded a ransom of one Bitcoin.[1]
Response
[edit]Brown declined to pay the ransom.
A replacement forum was subsequently established.
Relaunch
[edit]The replacement site became the current generation of the MCB forum.
The community history refers to this version as MCB 3.0.
Membership restoration
[edit]Following the relaunch, administrators worked to restore membership arrangements.
A November 2020 discussion documents administrators reactivating paid memberships after the incident.[5]
Historical impact
[edit]The incident interrupted continuity with the earlier forum database.
It also demonstrated the vulnerability of online communities as repositories of historical information.
Older archived pages remain important for researching discussions that predate the relaunch.
MCB in the 2020s
[edit]Continuing operation
[edit]MCB remained active during the 2020s.
Its discussion sections continued covering contemporary and historical paintball subjects.
Forum categories
[edit]As of October 2026, the forum included sections dedicated to:
- General paintball discussion
- Paintball news
- New players
- Technical questions
- Collecting
- Tournaments
- Regional events
- Paintball teams
- Custom projects
- Buying and selling equipment
- Member feedback
Specialist interests
[edit]The forum retained dedicated discussions concerning older mechanical markers and custom equipment.
Community size
[edit]The forum's public statistics in October 2026 reported approximately 7,000 registered members and more than 380,000 posts on the current platform.[2]
These figures apply to the post-2020 forum and do not represent the total historical activity of every earlier version.
Historical significance
[edit]Paintball internet culture
[edit]Brown established one of the longstanding online communities associated with paintball.
Collecting
[edit]The forum provided a meeting place for collectors interested in discontinued and unusual equipment.
Technical preservation
[edit]Community discussions helped preserve information about marker maintenance and repair.
Recreational paintball
[edit]Carter's Commando connected the online community with organised recreational events.
Historical archives
[edit]The website's collection of digitised publications and equipment discussions provides material for researching paintball history.
Community continuity
[edit]The forum survived major software transitions and a 2020 security incident while maintaining its specialist focus.
