California Paintball Park
California Paintball Park (abbreviated CPP; later associated with the names California Paintball and Airsoft Park and Combat Paintball Park) is a commercial paintball facility located at 31050 Charlie Canyon Road, Castaic, California, United States.
The park has operated as a paintball venue since at least 1999, with a contemporary 2009 account reporting that the facility originally opened in 1990.[1][2] A 2001 Los Angeles County planning record confirms that a paintball facility was already operating at the location when an application was made to regularise its land use.[3]
During the early 2010s, California Paintball Park was associated with the Giant Sportz network, which also included SC Village, Hollywood Sports Park, Giant Paintball Alpine and Giant San Diego.[4][5]
The park subsequently operated under the name Combat Paintball Park, retaining the Charlie Canyon Road address. Its activities expanded beyond recreational paintball to include airsoft, tournament paintball and other recreational games.[6]

History
[edit]Early history
[edit]California Paintball Park was established in Castaic, California, northwest of Los Angeles.
A September 2009 profile in BOA Magazine reported that the park had opened in 1990.[1]
Although this establishes a contemporary account of the park's claimed origins, independent documentation of its original opening year has not yet been located.
The earliest identified entry in WARPIG's historical field directory is dated 20 July 1999.[2]
The directory listed California Paintball Park on Charley Canyon Road in Castaic and identified its website as PaintballPark.net.
It advertised wooded and constructed playing fields, rental equipment, compressed-air fills, sheltered staging areas and walk-on paintball.
The entry provides evidence that the park was an established commercial paintball venue by the end of the 1990s.
2001 planning application
[edit]On 27 July 2001, Los Angeles County submitted documentation for Conditional Use Permit 00-164, concerning an existing paintball facility identified as California Paint Park.[3]
The application was recorded in the California Environmental Quality Act database under State Clearinghouse number 2001071133.
The planning record described the proposal as an application to legalise an existing paintball facility that had been operating without the necessary land-use entitlement.
The documented site occupied approximately 35 acres.
Its location was described as Charley Canyon Road, accessed from Tapia Canyon Road, west of Buckfield Road.
The land was designated for heavy agricultural use.
The planning record is significant because it establishes that paintball activities were already taking place at the property in 2001.
It does not, by itself, establish the final outcome of the permit application.
Change of ownership in the 2000s
[edit]In September 2009, BOA Magazine published a feature on California Paintball Park.[1]
The article identified Les Vido as the park's owner.
It reported that the facility had been operating under new ownership for approximately three years.
This suggests a change of ownership around 2006, although the exact transaction date has not been independently confirmed.
The article described Vido's emphasis on providing a family-friendly recreational environment.
The park was reported to occupy approximately 38 acres and contain more than a dozen playing fields.
Its facilities included a concession stand, private party areas, covered staging areas and equipment facilities.
The article reported that the park employed between 10 and 20 staff on operating days, depending on attendance.
Operations in 2009
[edit]California Paintball Park offered both recreational paintball and tournament-oriented facilities during 2009.
Weekend walk-on sessions operated from approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Private parties and corporate events could be arranged during the week.
The park also offered dedicated tournament arena sessions, including evening practice on a lighted field.[1]
The venue was reported to be used for training by local law enforcement, firefighters and military personnel.
Rental packages included paintball markers, goggles, protective clothing and ammunition.
The park also maintained a target range and staging facilities.
Giant Sportz affiliation
[edit]During the early 2010s, California Paintball Park became associated with the Giant Sportz commercial paintball network.
Giant Sportz was operated by paintball entrepreneurs Dennis Bukowski and Giovanni D'Egidio, who were also associated with SC Village and Hollywood Sports Park.
An April 2012 announcement of the Giant Sportz Field Makeover Program identified California Paintball Park as one of the facilities associated with the organisation.[4]
A surviving Los Angeles County employee paintball promotion listed the park alongside four other Giant-associated venues.[5]
The five advertised locations were:
- SC Village — Chino
- Hollywood Sports Park — Bellflower
- California Paintball Park — Castaic
- Giant Paintball Alpine — Alpine
- Giant Paintball Lakeside — Lakeside
The promotional material establishes the park's inclusion in the network.
It does not independently establish the exact date on which Giant Sportz became involved in the Castaic operation or whether the relationship involved ownership, management or shared marketing.
California Paintball and Airsoft Park
[edit]By the mid-2010s, the venue was also advertised as California Paintball and Airsoft Park.
A 2016 CBS Los Angeles guide identified the Castaic facility under that name and associated it with Giant Sportz.[7]
The article described the park as offering eight hillside paintball and airsoft courses.
It also advertised weekend walk-on play and private group bookings.
The source reported an approximately 18-acre playing area, substantially smaller than the overall property areas described in earlier accounts.
These figures may represent different measurements of the site or its usable playing area and should not be treated as evidence of a confirmed reduction in property size.
Combat Paintball Park
[edit]The facility subsequently operated under the name Combat Paintball Park.
The park's website identifies the same address at 31050 Charlie Canyon Road in Castaic.[6]
The Combat Paintball Park name is documented in a field directory updated in August 2023.[8]
The website advertises paintball, airsoft and other recreational activities.
It describes 11 purpose-built playing fields and a tournament field with inflatable bunkers and artificial turf.
The park also offers private parties, corporate activities and recreational group events.
Its website describes the facility as having operated since 1999.
This differs from the 1990 opening year reported by BOA Magazine in 2009.
The discrepancy has not yet been resolved.
The continuity of the address establishes a connection between the historical California Paintball Park and the present Combat Paintball Park site, but the precise corporate and ownership transitions require further research.
Facilities
[edit]Playing fields
[edit]California Paintball Park offered a mixture of natural-terrain and constructed playing environments.
The 1999 WARPIG directory identified wooded fields and concept fields.[2]
By 2009, the park was reported to have more than a dozen playing fields.[1]
The fields accommodated recreational games and organised group activities.
A 2016 guide described eight hillside paintball and airsoft courses.[7]
The number and configuration of fields changed over time.
Tournament arena
[edit]The park maintained facilities for tournament paintball.
In 2009, its published pricing included a separate arena and tournament admission category.
The park also offered evening tournament practice on a lighted arena.[1]
This provided local competitive players with access to organised training outside normal weekend recreational hours.
Under the Combat Paintball Park name, the facility advertises a regulation-sized NXL-style tournament field with inflatable bunkers on artificial turf.[9]
The current operator identifies the field as a venue for tournament activities and referee certification clinics.
The exact date on which the present tournament field was constructed has not been established.
Staging and support facilities
[edit]Historical accounts document several facilities supporting recreational paintball.
These included:
- Covered staging areas
- Equipment rental facilities
- Compressed-air and CO2 filling services
- Food and concessions
- Private party areas
- Target practice facilities
- Parking
The facilities supported both experienced players and first-time participants.
Recreational paintball
[edit]Walk-on play
[edit]California Paintball Park offered regular walk-on paintball sessions.
Walk-on play allowed individuals and small groups to join organised games without reserving a private field.
The 2009 account described weekend sessions and different rental packages for half-day and full-day play.[1]
The park offered games on a variety of field layouts.
Private events
[edit]The park accommodated birthday parties, corporate events and other organised groups.
Private bookings could be arranged outside regular walk-on sessions.
A 2009 report documented a birthday party held at the park and described its organisation of games for inexperienced players.[1]
Private group activities remained part of the business under the later Combat Paintball Park name.
Equipment rental
[edit]The park offered rental equipment for players who did not own their own gear.
Historical packages included semi-automatic paintball markers, goggles, protective clothing and paintballs.
The 1999 WARPIG directory also documented compressed-air and CO2 services.[2]
Equipment rental was an important part of the park's recreational business model.
Tournament paintball
[edit]Competitive training
[edit]California Paintball Park provided tournament-oriented facilities alongside its recreational playing fields.
The 2009 published admission information distinguished tournament arena use from general recreational admission.[1]
Evening sessions were also offered on a lighted arena.
These facilities enabled competitive players to train during the week.
Later tournament facilities
[edit]Combat Paintball Park advertises an artificial-turf tournament field using inflatable bunkers.
The current operator describes the field as suitable for NXL-style layouts.[9]
It also identifies the field as having hosted UPL and PBSL activities and NXL referee certification clinics.
These claims relate to the later operation of the venue and should not be retroactively attributed to the Giant Sportz period without supporting records.
Airsoft and additional activities
[edit]Airsoft
[edit]California Paintball Park expanded to include airsoft activities.
By 2016, the facility was being advertised as California Paintball and Airsoft Park.[7]
The later Combat Paintball Park operation continued to offer airsoft.
Its current field descriptions include areas dedicated to airsoft gameplay.[9]
Other recreational activities
[edit]Combat Paintball Park subsequently expanded its recreational offerings.
Its website advertises activities including:
- Paintball
- Airsoft
- Low-impact paintball
- Gel blaster games
- Nerf games
- Archery tag
These activities reflect the later development of the site as a broader recreational venue.[6]
Ownership and management
[edit]Les Vido
[edit]Les Vido was identified as the owner of California Paintball Park in September 2009.[1]
The same account stated that the park had been under new ownership for approximately three years.
This provides evidence of a change in management or ownership during the mid-2000s.
Further research is required to establish the identity of the earlier owner and the precise ownership history.
Giant Sportz
[edit]California Paintball Park was subsequently advertised as part of Giant Sportz.
The organisation was associated with Dennis Bukowski and Giovanni D'Egidio.
The documented affiliation is supported by a 2012 industry announcement and later promotional materials.[4][5]
The precise corporate arrangements are not established by these sources.
Later operators
[edit]The site subsequently adopted the Combat Paintball Park name.
Its continued use of the same address establishes geographical continuity with California Paintball Park.
However, the precise dates and circumstances of any sale, management transfer or rebranding have not been established.
Historical significance
[edit]California Paintball Park is a long-established commercial paintball venue in Los Angeles County.
Its historical significance includes:
- Documented operation by July 1999
- A reported opening date of 1990
- A surviving 2001 county planning record
- Recreational and tournament facilities during the 2000s
- Documented ownership by Les Vido in 2009
- Association with the Giant Sportz network during the early 2010s
- Expansion into airsoft and other recreational activities
- Continued operation of the Castaic site under the Combat Paintball Park name
The park provides an example of a commercial paintball facility that operated through several periods of change in the industry.
Its history also illustrates the relationship between independently operated paintball parks and regional commercial networks.
