2017 NXL World Cup

From WikiPaintball

The 2017 NXL World Cup was a National Xball League (NXL) paintball tournament held from 2 to 5 November 2017 in Kissimmee, Florida, United States. It concluded the league's five-event national championship season, with associated two-player competition beginning on 1 November.[1][2]

Edmonton Impact defeated San Diego Dynasty 4–3 in the professional final and finished as professional season champions. The victory gave Impact consecutive NXL World Cup and professional season championships.[3][4][5]

Dates and venue

[edit]

The main tournament took place at 6000 West Osceola Parkway, Kissimmee, from Thursday, 2 November, to Sunday, 5 November 2017. Professional competition was scheduled from Friday to Sunday.[1]

The separately recorded two-player World Championship programme ran from 1 to 5 November, with a play-in competition on 1 November.[2][6]

Competition formats

[edit]

Professional, Semi-Pro and Division 2–4 X-Ball were advertised with 16-minute game times. Traditional five-player competition was offered in Divisions 3, 4 and 5, alongside Open Pump five-player competition.[1]

Other formats included Open and Amateur ten-player, Mounds competition capped at 5.5 balls per second, Amateur three-player capped at 5.5 balls per second, and collegiate five-player RaceTo-2.[1]

The two-player programme included an Amateur championship, an Amateur play-in, and Female Amateur, Novice and Youth divisions. These results were maintained separately through the NXL 2vs2 Series.[2][6]

Professional competition

[edit]

Edmonton Impact lost its opening preliminary match 6–3 to Los Angeles Ironmen before defeating Boom, Los Angeles Infamous and Seattle Uprising.[3]

In the knockout rounds, Impact defeated Tampa Bay Damage 5–3 in the quarter-finals and San Antonio X-Factor 6–0 in the semi-finals. Impact then defeated San Diego Dynasty 4–3 in the final.[3]

In a contemporary interview with Planet Eclipse, Impact owner and coach Bart Yachimec described the team establishing a 4–0 lead in the final before Dynasty recovered. He also discussed the team's response to its opening defeat and the contribution of coach Dave Bains.[5]

Season championships

[edit]

World Cup completed the national season following the Las Vegas, Texas, Atlantic City and Chicago Opens. Edmonton Impact finished first in the professional standings with 933 points, ahead of San Antonio X-Factor on 808.[4]

The published final standings identify the following first-placed teams in divisions contested across multiple national events:[4]

Division Season champions Points
Professional X-Ball Edmonton Impact 933
Semi-Pro X-Ball Sacramento DMG 464
Division 2 X-Ball NRG Elite 430.06
Division 3 X-Ball TBD Jits 427.61
Division 4 X-Ball Project Mayhem 406.63
Division 3 five-player West Coast Sharks 3 401.42
Division 4 five-player LVPP OUTKAST 408.83
Division 5 five-player Detroit Action IV 263.71
Open ten-player AAF 2 455.79
Open Pump five-player Batteries Not Included 170
Mechanical Intermediate five-player THE eNMEy 400

The mechanical championship was accumulated at the four preceding opens; the final standings do not list a World Cup round in that division. The separately recorded Mounds competitions should not be treated as that championship's World Cup round.[4][8]

Amateur ten-player and Amateur 5.5 bps three-player appear with World Cup as their only event in the national season tables. Their event victories therefore do not represent titles accumulated across several national rounds.[4]
