2009 PSP World Cup

From WikiPaintball

The 2009 PSP World Cup was the final tournament of the 2009 Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) season, held from 7 to 11 October 2009 at Fantasy of Flight in Polk City, Florida. Boston Red Legion won the professional World Cup title, defeating Philadelphia Americans in a best-of-three final. Philadelphia nevertheless finished first in the professional season standings.[1][2][4]

Venue and competition

[edit]

The tournament moved from Disney's Wide World of Sports to the grounds of Fantasy of Flight, a vintage aircraft restoration facility and aviation museum in Polk City. PSP had reduced its national calendar from five events to four for 2009.[1]

Competition included professional and semi-professional RaceTo-7, Division 1 and Division 2 RaceTo-5, Division 3 and Division 4 RaceTo-4, Masters RaceTo-4, and Division 2–5 RaceTo-2.[2]

The longer-format competitions began on Wednesday. Hot conditions affected the event, with WARPIG reporting that several players required assistance after overheating on Thursday.[1]

Professional competition

[edit]

Boston Red Legion and Philadelphia Americans contested a best-of-three championship final. Philadelphia won the opening match 5–3, but Boston recovered to win the second 7–0 and the deciding match 7–4. Boston therefore won the series by two matches to one.[2]

Tampa Bay Damage defeated Los Angeles Ironmen 7–3 in the third-place match.[2]

Differences between surviving records

[edit]

WARPIG's report differs from APPA's final records in several RaceTo-2 placings, including the Division 2 runners-up, the Division 4 winners and the Division 5 third-place finishers. The tables above follow APPA's final scoreboards and corresponding placings.[1][2][3]

The Division 4 RaceTo-2 scoreboard records a 1–1 point score between Notorious and Revolution, but awards the match to Notorious. No additional deciding score is supplied here.[2]

Season championships

[edit]

World Cup results and season standings produced different champions in several divisions. Philadelphia Americans finished the professional season with 370 points, ahead of Boston Red Legion on 347.5 and Los Angeles Ironmen on 317.5.[4]

The following teams finished first in the multi-event season standings:

Division Season champions Points

The standings list only World Cup results for Masters and Division 2 RaceTo-2, rather than a multi-event championship in those categories.[4]
