2006 Invasion of Normandy
The 2006 Invasion of Normandy was a large-scale scenario paintball event held on 15–16 July 2006 at Skirmish USA in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, United States. Based on the Allied landings in Normandy during the Second World War, it formed part of the annual Invasion of Normandy event series.[1][2]
The event recorded 4,008 participants. Contemporary coverage described this as a new attendance record for a scenario paintball game. The American faction won with 79,275 points, ahead of the German and French factions.[1]
Event
[edit]The event programme extended across three days and two nights, with the main scenario competition taking place on Saturday and Sunday.[1] Players competed across Skirmish USA's woodland and purpose-built playing areas using a storyline inspired by the Normandy campaign.
The principal factions represented American and German forces. A separately scored French faction and several fictional organisations and characters were incorporated into the wider scenario.[1]
The opening engagement recreated a beach assault. Approximately 2,000 American players advanced against German defensive positions representing Omaha, Utah and Sword beaches. German defenders used fixed positions and a converted school bus known as the Battleship New Jersey as a mobile firing platform.[1]
Heavy rain began approximately 30 minutes after the opening assault, producing muddy conditions which continued to affect the scenario.[1]
Scenario
[edit]The scenario combined the historical Normandy theme with fictional missions, characters and artefacts. The American and German factions competed for territory and objectives while attempting to influence or control neutral characters.[1]
Eldon Tyrell, leader of the fictional Tyrell Corporation, supplied equipment and information to both sides. Scenario artefacts included the Ark of the Covenant, the Shroud of Turin, a Holy Hand Grenade and two chalices.[1]
Named missions included:
- Operation Rosebud — an American mission to eliminate the fictional Führer.
- Project Ragnarok — a German effort to construct a fictional nuclear weapon.
- Intelligence and infiltration missions involving spies placed within opposing command structures.
- Missions to capture or protect characters, artefacts and faction headquarters.
Robb Wood served as the American general. His command staff included Nixx Valor and other experienced scenario players organised through a group referred to as the Council of War. Chuck Stoner served as scenario director.[1]
The event also included a group of young scenario players known as the Orphans, led by Stephanie “Miss Information” Wood and Ron Valor. The group completed missions in support of the American faction.[1]
Result
[edit]The American faction accumulated the highest score and won the event.
| Position | Faction | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Americans | 79,275 |
| 2 | Germans | 56,575 |
| 3 | French | 27,400 |
The result was announced by scenario director Chuck Stoner at the conclusion of the event.[1]
Attendance record
[edit]The organisers recorded 4,008 participants at the 2006 Invasion of Normandy.[1]
The previous reported record was 3,701 players at Oklahoma D-Day, held approximately one month earlier. Contemporary coverage therefore presented the Skirmish event as the largest scenario paintball game held up to that time.[1]
Photographs taken at the event on 15 and 16 July document the German headquarters, scenario objectives and players operating within the event's mission system.[2]
