1993 SC Village Challenge Cup
The 1993 SC Village Challenge Cup, also known as the 1993 Challenge Cup, was a stock-class paintball tournament held at SC Village in Corona, California, in 1993. Team GBD II won the tournament with 198 points.[1]
Background
[edit]SC Village organised the Challenge Cup in response to growing interest in stock-class competition. Contemporary coverage reported that players returning from the International Masters in Tennessee and the Pacific Stockgun Championships in Hawaii wanted another stock-class tournament before the end of the year.[1]
The field included established stock-class teams as well as competitors associated with the professional tournament circuit. Grizwald, the Dragoons and the Kamikaze Shooters were described as stock-class specialists, while Team GBD and the Bushwackers had competed on the professional circuit.[1]
Format and equipment
[edit]The tournament used a restrictive stock-class equipment definition. Permitted markers were powered by a single 12-gram carbon-dioxide cartridge and used a parallel-feed system. Quick-change cartridge systems, constant-air systems and direct-feed systems were prohibited. Contemporary examples of qualifying markers included the Nel-Spot 007, PMI PGP, NSG Splatmaster and Brass Eagle Nightmare.[1]
Matches were played on two SC Village fields. The Iraqi field contained hills, sand dunes, gullies and bunkers, while the Beirut field was arranged as a small urban area with buildings, barriers and shooting lanes. Both fields allowed spectators to watch from the sidelines.[1]
Tournament
[edit]Team GBD II and the Budweisers led during the early part of the tournament. Grizwald, the Bushwackers and Carter Machine subsequently moved into contention. Before the final game, Team GBD I and the Kamikaze Shooters had been mathematically eliminated, while the remaining leading positions were still undecided.[1]
Team GBD II ultimately won with 198 points. Grizwald finished second on 174 points and the Bushwackers placed third with 162. The Budweisers and Carter Machine tied for fourth on 161 points. A photograph accompanying the report identified the Dragoons as the fifth-place team, although their score was not published.[1]
