The CFOA Experience
The CFOA Experience is a 2004 American tournament paintball film produced by DerDer. It documents four events from the 2004 Carolina Field Owners Association (CFOA) tournament series, with footage recorded in Easley, Atlanta, China Grove and Greensboro.[1]
The DVD contains more than 30 minutes of tournament footage, combining music-driven action sequences with bloopers and a trailer for Roadkill: The DerDer U.S. Tour.[1]
It was the first of three DerDer productions dedicated to the CFOA, followed by Insult to Injury (2005) and Sticks and Stones (2006).[3]
Production
[edit]The CFOA Experience was produced by DerDer, a San Diego-based paintball video production company associated with filmmaker Rob Astamendi.
In March 2004, Astamendi travelled to the CFOA season-opening tournament at NewGen Paintball in Easley, South Carolina, to film the competition.
Contemporary WARPIG reporting identified Astamendi as a representative of DerDer Productions and confirmed that he was producing a DVD documenting the series.[2]
The film was recorded using handheld three-chip professional video cameras positioned close to the playing fields.
DerDer employed high shutter speeds and progressive-scan recording to capture rapid movement and paintball impacts in detail.[1]
Tournament coverage
[edit]The documentary features highlights from four CFOA tournaments held during the 2004 season.
| Location | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Easley, South Carolina | Two chapters |
| Atlanta, Georgia | Two chapters |
| China Grove, North Carolina | Two chapters |
| Greensboro, North Carolina | One chapter |
The film also includes an introductory sequence.[1]
The production focuses on selected moments from tournament matches rather than presenting complete games.
Its footage includes eliminations, rapid advances, close-range engagements and mistakes made during competition.
The CFOA was an established regional tournament organisation whose 2004 competitions attracted teams from across the southeastern United States.
Its season opener in Easley drew 116 registered five-player teams, according to contemporary tournament reporting.[2]
Soundtrack
[edit]Music is a central element of The CFOA Experience, with tournament footage edited into short sequences accompanied by punk rock and alternative rock recordings.
WARPIG's November 2004 review identified nine soundtrack recordings and named eight contributing artists.[1]
The documented artists are:
- The Bouncing Souls
- Love Me Destroyer
- The Gambits
- The Fairlanes
- The Teeth
- Homemade
- Bombshell Rocks
- Stereotyperider
The original review does not provide the individual song titles or establish which recordings accompany each tournament sequence.
A complete, independently verified track listing has not yet been established.
DVD release
[edit]The CFOA Experience was commercially available by November 2004, when WARPIG published a contemporary review of the DVD.[1]
The release contains more than 30 minutes of CFOA tournament footage.
Additional material includes a blooper reel featuring falls, mistakes and accidental eliminations of teammates.
The DVD also contains a trailer for Roadkill: The DerDer U.S. Tour, another DerDer production covering American tournament events during 2004.
The original release carries a parental advisory for strong language audible in some tournament sequences.[1]
Reception
[edit]In his November 2004 WARPIG review, Bill Mills described the film's presentation as a series of action highlights edited to music rather than conventional game-by-game tournament coverage.
The review particularly noted DerDer's close-range filming, high shutter speeds and progressive-scan recording, which allowed individual paintball impacts to be examined in paused or slow-motion playback.[1]
Related films
[edit]DerDer subsequently produced two further CFOA tournament DVDs.
| Year | Film | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 2004 | The CFOA Experience | Four CFOA tournament events |
| 2005 | Insult to Injury | 2005 CFOA season |
| 2006 | Sticks and Stones | 2006 CFOA season |
Historical promotional material for Sticks and Stones identifies it as the third instalment in DerDer's CFOA series.[3]
