Kerry Rosenberry
Kerry "Viper" Rosenberry is an American paintball player and event organiser recognised for his contributions to the development of scenario paintball. He founded Viper Paintball in Houston, Texas, in 1996, becoming one of the earliest professional scenario paintball producers in the United States.[1]
Rosenberry was associated with the early scenario paintball community surrounding Wayne Dollack and Marion's Raiders in Florida. He subsequently organised scenario events throughout the United States, including at CPX Sports, EMR Paintball Park and SC Village.
He was also involved in producing Living Legends, one of the largest American scenario paintball events of the 2010s.[2]
Early paintball career
[edit]Rosenberry began playing paintball in Ocala, Florida, during the late 1980s.
He joined Marion's Raiders, a woodland tournament team whose members included Wayne Dollack and Diane "Mother" Howe.
The team competed in fifteen-player capture-the-flag tournaments during a period when pump-action markers were widely used.
According to Rosenberry's own account, members of Marion's Raiders began experimenting with extended recreational games to raise funds for tournament participation.
These games incorporated continuous play, role-playing and multiple objectives, contributing to the development of early scenario paintball.[1]
After moving away from Florida, Rosenberry continued travelling to participate in Dollack's scenario events.
He subsequently helped establish Team Blitzkrieg and served as its captain.[1]
Viper Paintball
[edit]Establishment
[edit]Rosenberry founded Viper Paintball in Houston, Texas, in 1996.
According to his account, he established the organisation after discussing his intention to produce scenario games outside Florida with Wayne Dollack.
The first Viper Paintball event attracted approximately 100 players.
Rosenberry initially operated the business alongside other employment before committing to scenario event production full-time.[1]
Viper Paintball expanded across the United States, organising events in states including Texas, Florida, New York and California.
The company worked with paintball facilities including Camp Blanding, EMR Paintball Park, CPX Sports and SC Village.
According to the company's historical account, individual events attracted as many as 2,500 participants.[1]
Scenario production
[edit]Rosenberry developed his own approach to extended scenario paintball games.
Rather than requiring continuous 24-hour gameplay, Viper events incorporated scheduled breaks while attempting to maximise available playing time.
A contemporary WARPIG report on Twilight Zone 6 in 2002 documented Rosenberry's approach to event scheduling, mission objectives and scoring.[3]
The event included conventional scenario missions alongside supplementary activities, including a chess tournament whose outcome contributed points towards the paintball competition.
Viper Paintball events commonly incorporated fictional characters, specialist missions, intelligence gathering and objectives based on physical props.
Rosenberry also developed written scenario rules covering gameplay, specialist equipment, player conduct and event safety.[4]
Living Legends
[edit]Rosenberry was involved in the inaugural Living Legends event, held at CPX Sports in Joliet, Illinois, on 5–6 April 2008.
The event was developed through a collaboration involving CPX Sports, Smart Parts, Wayne Dollack and Rosenberry.
Dollack developed the principal gameplay, while Rosenberry was responsible for commander codebooks, mission scheduling, communications and scoring.[5]
Rosenberry subsequently became a principal producer of Living Legends.
The sixth edition, held in May 2013, was produced by Viper Paintball, with Rosenberry bringing his event production staff and referees to CPX Sports.[6]
Living Legends VII took place in May 2014 and attracted more than 2,000 participants.
Contemporary reporting by John Amodea identified Rosenberry and Viper Paintball as the event's producers.[2]
Other events
[edit]Rosenberry produced numerous scenario paintball events during his career, including games based on historical conflicts, science fiction and fictional narratives.
In August 2002, he assisted William Shatner's Federation team during the SPPLAT scenario event at Challenge Park Xtreme in Illinois.
The event used officially licensed Star Trek factions, with Rosenberry and Patric "PacMan" McKinnon supporting Shatner's command staff.[7]
He also produced Tombstone, a Wild West-themed scenario event held at Avid Extreme Sports Park in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
A 2019 report published by GI Sportz documented more than 500 participants at the fifth edition of Tombstone.
The event incorporated individual player characters, fictional identities, pistol duels, gambling mechanics and specialist missions.[8]
Final Viper Paintball event
[edit]In 2022, Rosenberry announced the conclusion of Viper Paintball's event production programme.
The company's official website advertised Fallout: The Final Chapter as its final event, scheduled for 12–13 November 2022 at Whatz-Up Family Fun Park near Dallas, Texas.
The event featured a scenario based on the Fallout video game setting, incorporating fictional factions, character roles and specialist props.
The published programme included Saturday afternoon competition, a night game and a concluding battle on Sunday.[9]
The announcement marked the planned conclusion of more than 25 years of event production under the Viper Paintball name.
Contribution to scenario paintball
[edit]Rosenberry was among the early organisers responsible for developing scenario paintball into a professionally produced recreational format.
His work extended the model pioneered by Wayne Dollack in Florida to other parts of the United States.
Through Viper Paintball, he developed large-scale games incorporating written rules, organised missions, fictional characters and structured scoring systems.
His collaboration with Dollack on Living Legends connected two generations of scenario paintball organisation.
Rosenberry also contributed to the development of scenario game rules used by other event organisers.[4][10]
In 2026, paintball historian John Amodea acknowledged Rosenberry among the contributors who assisted with research and fact-checking for The Complete History of Scenario Paintball, published in Paintball Media Magazine.[11]
