Decay of Nations 16
Decay of Nations 16, officially promoted as Decay of Nations XVI: Utopia's Stand, was the sixteenth edition of the American scenario paintball event Decay of Nations. It was held on 30 September and 1 October 2023 at SC Village in Chino, California.[1]
The event featured a fictional conflict between UNA and EKRON, with opposing armies commanded by James Scott and Eli Booth respectively. The scenario combined objective-based paintball, armoured vehicles and a series of missions across different sections of SC Village.[1][2]
Scenario
[edit]The 2023 storyline, titled Utopia's Stand, was set in a post-apocalyptic world in which two factions competed for control of the last surviving utopian city.
UNA, identified in the 2023 promotional material as the United Nations Alliance, represented the defenders of the city. EKRON was portrayed as an expansionist faction attempting to conquer the settlement and control its remaining resources.
The fictional conflict centred on the protection of the city, control of supplies and the use of advanced technology.[3]
Commanders
[edit]The event's published mission guide identified the following command staff.[1]
| Faction | General | Executive officers |
|---|---|---|
| UNA | James Scott | Jose "Reaper" Barajas, Joseph "Happy" Valadez, Lazy Fox, Peng Kin, Will Merrill |
| EKRON | Eli Booth | Ben Tobin, Kevin Jones, Stephen Snow, Ricky Huang, Shandon "Insidious" Brewer |
Event
[edit]Decay of Nations 16 took place over two days of scenario competition, with a player gathering held on Friday, 29 September.
The official schedule divided the battlefield into lower and upper playing areas, with teams changing their starting positions between missions.
Saturday, 30 September
[edit]Saturday's competition comprised eight numbered missions across the lower playing fields.
Objectives included recovering ammunition supplies, retrieving components for fuel and communications infrastructure, capturing supply stations, and attacking enemy installations.
Later missions involved escorting engineers, recovering explosives, destroying enemy supply lines and interfering with communications systems.[1]
Sunday, 1 October
[edit]Sunday's programme moved to the upper playing fields.
Three additional missions involved recovering calibration equipment, constructing communications devices and capturing satellite-related objectives.
The final battle, advertised as Blood Bath, was scheduled for 14:00 at Blackhawk Outpost, with an awards ceremony and prize giveaway following the conclusion of play.[1]
Game rules
[edit]The event used a points-based mission system, with opposing armies accumulating scores through completed objectives.
The official rules permitted approved paintball tanks, armoured suits known as mechs, shields, grenades and rocket launchers.
Specialised equipment required inspection and approval before entering the playing field.
Participants were required to use event-approved paintballs, and First Strike rounds were prohibited. Paintball markers were limited to semi-automatic operation and a maximum muzzle velocity of 285 feet per second.[2]
Eliminated players could return to play through designated reinsertion points, including controlled flag stations.
Associated activities
[edit]SC Village organised a player party on Friday, 29 September, from 17:00 to 20:00.
The gathering included a costume competition, food, games, live music and prizes.[4]
The weekend also featured a vendor exhibition, camping facilities and equipment promotions associated with the event.[1][3]
