North v South
North v South (also known as North vs South or NvS) is an annual British scenario paintball event organised by Warped Sports. Established in 1992, the event is based on a competition between players representing the North and South of the United Kingdom.
North v South developed from a recreational paintball game into a large-scale festival incorporating woodsball, scenario missions, camping and a paintball industry trade exhibition. It is one of Britain's longest-running scenario paintball events.[1][2]
History
[edit]Origins
[edit]North v South originated in 1992 at Activ8 Paintball, later associated with Warped Cosford.
According to Jim Frensham of Warped Paintball, the original event was conceived by Tim Taylor as an alternative to conventional recreational walk-on games. The concept divided participants into opposing Northern and Southern forces, reflecting the established regional rivalry within British paintball.[1]
The format proved popular and developed into a recurring event.
Expansion
[edit]During the 2000s and 2010s, North v South expanded into a major gathering for recreational paintball players from across Britain and overseas.
The event was held at military training facilities, allowing organisers to accommodate large numbers of participants across extensive woodland and open terrain.
A 2014 event report by Mayhem Paintball recorded approximately 1,800 participants, with the main battle taking place on Sunday. The event also featured transport buses moving players between different areas of the battlefield.[3]
The 2015 festival took place from 1 to 3 May at the Defence Training Estate in Swynnerton, Staffordshire.
That year's programme included the Evasion Night Challenge, a UK versus international players' scenario game and the principal North v South battle, which followed a fictional viral outbreak storyline.[4]
25th anniversary
[edit]North v South celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017.
Planet Eclipse documented the anniversary through a video and an interview with organiser Jim Frensham, who discussed the event's origins and development since 1992.[1]
By 2018, the event was attracting approximately 1,200 to 1,400 participants annually, according to retailer Just Paintball.[2]
Recent editions
[edit]The 2021 event was promoted as Homecoming and took place in July at Warped Cosford.[5]
The 2023 and 2024 festivals were held at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley, near Coventry. The venue provided woodland playing areas, camping facilities and space for the trade exhibition.[6][7]
The 2025 event returned to Warped Cosford, taking place from 2 to 4 May under the scenario title El Agua.[8]
The 2026 festival took place from 1 to 3 May, continuing the El Agua storyline with a scenario based on competing forces attempting to control a diminishing water supply.[9]
Event format
[edit]North v South is organised around two principal opposing forces:
- North: Players representing Northern Britain.
- South: Players representing Southern Britain.
Participants register for a side, with each army operating under appointed commanders responsible for coordinating missions and battlefield movements.
The main event uses a fictional scenario that changes between editions. Teams compete to capture objectives, control territory and complete missions, with points contributing towards the final result.
The established festival format includes smaller games and activities on Friday and Saturday, followed by the principal large-scale battle.
During the 2010s, the main North v South game was generally held on Sunday, with additional games contributing points towards the overall competition.[2]
Additional games
[edit]North v South has incorporated several additional formats alongside its principal scenario.
These have included night games, limited-ammunition challenges, international player competitions and mechanical paintball events.
Mechanical Masters UK has organised activities at the festival, including mechanical-only games and a three-player tournament featuring Northern and Southern teams.[10]
Venues
[edit]North v South has used several venues during its history, including established paintball facilities and military training grounds.
Documented locations include:
| Venue | Location | Documented period |
|---|---|---|
| Activ8 / Warped Cosford | Cosford, Shropshire | Original event in 1992; subsequent editions including 2021 and 2025 |
| Defence Training Estate, Swynnerton | Staffordshire | 2015 |
| Heart of England Conference and Events Centre | Fillongley, Warwickshire | 2023–2024 |
The use of large woodland areas and former military training facilities has allowed the event to accommodate extended scenario games and large numbers of participants.[3][4][6][8]
Trade exhibition and festival activities
[edit]Alongside the paintball competition, North v South developed into a multi-day festival featuring camping, evening entertainment and a paintball equipment trade exhibition.
Manufacturers and retailers have attended to demonstrate and sell markers, clothing, accessories and other equipment.
The 2023 event included a Just Paintball retail exhibition and marker servicing facilities.[6]
The trade exhibition remains an established part of the festival, providing participants with access to equipment retailers and specialist paintball businesses.[11]
Significance
[edit]North v South is one of the longest-established scenario paintball events in Britain, with a documented history beginning in 1992.
Its combination of regional team rivalry, large-scale scenario games and festival activities distinguished it from conventional walk-on paintball events.
The event's longevity, participation figures and involvement of paintball manufacturers and retailers have made it a prominent fixture of the British recreational paintball calendar.[1][2][3]
