SuperGame
SuperGame is a long-running American scenario paintball event series featuring large-scale woodsball games, extended playing periods and objective-based competition. Originating in the Pacific Northwest, the series is particularly associated with its Oregon event, which has attracted large numbers of recreational players, scenario teams and paintball equipment vendors.
SuperGame's organisers trace the event's history to 1989. The series subsequently expanded beyond Oregon, with events held in several regions of the United States.[1]
History
[edit]SuperGame developed into an established fixture of the American recreational paintball calendar. Dan Bonebrake, associated with Warpaint International in Salem, Oregon, was a longstanding organiser and promoter of the event.[2]
By 2011, SuperGame had reached its 41st edition. SuperGame 41 took place from 29 April to 1 May 2011 in St. Paul, Oregon. The event incorporated three days of paintball, including night games, traditional SuperGame competition and Spoils of War. Its associated Bryce Hotchkiss Memorial Raffle supported Liberty House, a local child abuse assessment centre.[2]
The event continued expanding during the 2010s. SuperGame 45 was documented in May 2013, when paintball historian Daniel Bacci exhibited historical paintball markers and equipment at the event.[3]
SuperGame 49 took place at SniperzDen Paintball in St. Paul, Oregon, in May 2016. Contemporary accounts described extensive woodland playing areas, constructed bases and participation by established paintball teams.[4]
The 50th numbered SuperGame was held in Oregon in May 2017.[5]
By August 2017, the event had also expanded to the eastern United States. SuperGame East was held at Outdoor Xtreme in Chesapeake City, Maryland, from 18 to 20 August 2017.[6]
The series continued operating under the SuperGame name, with Dan Bonebrake and Brian Barno among its principal organisers.
At the 2023 Summit Awards, organised by Major League of Paintball, SuperGame received the Scenario Big Game of the Year award, while SuperGame Series received the Producer or Game Creator of the Year award.[7]
Game format
[edit]SuperGame combines large-scale recreational paintball with structured objectives and extended periods of continuous play.
The traditional format involves two principal opposing forces, identified as the Red Team and Blue Team. A third group, known as the Renegades, operates as a balancing force, supporting whichever side requires assistance during the game.[8]
Players compete to capture and hold designated objectives, including flag stations and fortified positions. Eliminated players can return to play through designated reincarnation points, allowing games to continue for several hours without conventional tournament-style breaks.[8]
The established three-day programme includes several distinct games:
- Friday: Magazine-fed paintball, Spoils of War and Night Ops.
- Saturday: Traditional SuperGame, including major and minor objectives and a final battle.
- Sunday: SuperGame Domination, based on capturing and retaining control of designated bases.
Additional activities have included pistol challenges, three-player mechanical paintball competitions, equipment trading and prize raffles.[8][9]
Locations
[edit]SuperGame's principal Oregon venue is SniperzDen Paintball in St. Paul, Oregon. The venue incorporates woodland terrain, constructed defensive positions and camping facilities.[10]
By 2026, the SuperGame Series operated events at four principal venues:
| Event | Venue | Location |
|---|---|---|
| SuperGame Oregon | SniperzDen Paintball | St. Paul, Oregon |
| SuperGame Michigan | Hell Survivors | Pinckney, Michigan |
| SuperGame Maryland | Outdoor Xtreme Paintball & Airsoft | Chesapeake City, Maryland |
| SuperGame Florida | Outdoor Xtreme Battlefield Orlando | Orlando, Florida |
These venues were listed by the organisers as part of the SuperGame Series.[10][11][12][13]
Participation and significance
[edit]SuperGame is associated with large-scale recreational paintball rather than professional tournament competition.
Its Oregon event is the largest within the series. The organisers report that attendance is typically capped at approximately 2,000 players.[1]
The event brings together recreational participants, established scenario teams, equipment manufacturers and vendors. Its programme accommodates different styles of play, including traditional hopper-fed markers, pump paintball and magazine-fed equipment.
SuperGame's continuation across several decades and expansion to additional American venues have established it as a longstanding event series within the United States scenario paintball community.
