South African National Paintball Association (SANPA), now known as the South African National Paintball and Airsoft Association, is the national representative organisation for paintball in South Africa. Established in 2012, SANPA represents the country's paintball interests internationally through the United Paintball Federation (UPBF) and works on player development, national team selection, field safety and industry standards.[1][2]

The organisation has coordinated South African national teams at international competitions since 2013. Its achievements include South Africa's victory at the inaugural UPBF Women's Three-Player World Championship in 2018.[3][4]

History

[edit]

Establishment (2012–2013)

[edit]

SANPA was established in 2012 to promote and organise paintball nationally, improve safety standards and provide representation for South African players, clubs, fields and tournament organisers.[1]

Its early activities included developing national registration structures, supporting domestic leagues and establishing links with international paintball organisations.

In 2013, South Africa participated in the inaugural UPBF Paintball World Championship, held in France. The men's team finished 13th.[3]

SANPA also supported the development of domestic tournament paintball through its relationship with the South African Regional Paintball League (SARPL).

The inaugural Paintball Super Cup was held at Forever Resort Gariep from 6 to 8 December 2013. Organised through SARPL, the event attracted more than 50 teams competing in three-player and five-player divisions.[5]

Formal registration and international development (2016–2019)

[edit]

In 2016, SANPA registered as a South African non-profit company under registration number 2016/369235/08. It also obtained non-profit organisation registration 182-078 NPO.[1]

The association expanded its national team programme during this period, including youth and women's representative teams.

South Africa entered the Under-19 category of the UPBF World Championship in 2016, finishing fourth. The country subsequently competed in the men's and Under-19 categories in 2017.[3]

In 2018, SANPA sent South Africa's first women's national paintball team to the UPBF World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic.

The team won the inaugural Women's Three-Player World Championship, defeating Russia 2–1 in the final.[4]

At the 2019 World Championship in Amsterdam, SANPA fielded six national teams across the men's, women's, women's three-player, Under-16, Under-19 and veterans categories.

South Africa finished third in both the Under-16 and women's three-player competitions.[3]

Expansion of name and responsibilities (2020)

[edit]

On 19 June 2020, SANPA decided to update its full organisational name to the South African National Paintball and Airsoft Association, retaining the abbreviation SANPA.

According to the association, the change was intended to give paintball and airsoft equal recognition in its dealings with government and industry stakeholders. Airsoft had been included within its activities since the organisation's establishment.[1]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, SANPA worked with government departments on protocols allowing paintball and airsoft facilities to resume operations.

On 15 July 2020, South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture granted permission for activities to resume under specified health and safety conditions.

SANPA subsequently issued compliance requirements for registered venues, clubs and event organisers.[1]

Continued international representation

[edit]

SANPA continued representing South Africa within the UPBF during the 2020s.

South Africa returned to the men's World Championship in Dreux, France, in 2025, finishing 14th.

At the 2026 World Championship, the men's national team finished ninth.[3]

Governance and responsibilities

[edit]

SANPA operates as a registered non-profit company and national representative organisation.

Its stated responsibilities include:

  • Representing South African paintball internationally.
  • Selecting and coordinating national representative teams.
  • Supporting clubs, players, leagues and tournament organisers.
  • Developing field safety and operational standards.
  • Liaising with government departments and regulatory authorities.
  • Participating in international equipment and safety standardisation.

SANPA operates a membership system for players, clubs, event organisers and paintball venues.[2][6]

International affiliations

[edit]

United Paintball Federation

[edit]

SANPA is the recognised South African representative within the United Paintball Federation.

The association was involved in the early development of the UPBF and is identified among its founding member organisations.

SANPA's chairman was elected General Secretary of the UPBF in 2018.[1][2]

Its membership provides South Africa with representation at the federation's international championships and governing congress.

African Paintball Federation

[edit]

The African Paintball Federation identifies SANPA as South Africa's national paintball governing organisation.

Its published profile also identifies the South African Regional Paintball League as an important domestic competition structure.[7]

Safety and standards

[edit]

SANPA has been involved in the development and application of paintball safety standards.

The organisation participates in the work of ASTM International, including subcommittee F08.24, which develops standards relating to paintball equipment and facilities.

SANPA's involvement in the ASTM paintball subcommittee is documented from 2017.[1]

In June 2020, the organisation was admitted to the South African Bureau of Standards technical committee TC 228, covering tourism and recreational facilities, including adventure tourism.

SANPA has also published guidance concerning field operations, protective equipment, compressed-air systems, marker chronographing and risk assessments.[1][6]

Domestic competition

[edit]

SANPA has worked with domestic tournament organisations, including the South African Regional Paintball League.

SARPL developed a national tournament structure featuring three-player and five-player divisions, with regional events across several provinces.

The annual Paintball Super Cup brought together teams from different regions to contest national and provincial championships.

The inaugural 2013 competition included teams from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State, with additional participation from Namibia in the three-player competition.[5]

SANPA lists SARPL among its affiliated organisations.[8]

National team programme

[edit]

SANPA has coordinated South African participation at the UPBF Paintball World Championship across several competitive categories.

Selected documented results include:

Year Division Position
2013 Men 13th
2015 Men 4th
2016 Under-19 4th
2018 Women 3-Player 1st
2019 Under-16 3rd
