The 2009 MXball Cancún Open, promoted as the International Cancun Open Paintball Tournament 2009, was a proposed MXball tournament in Cancún, Mexico. Its revised programme scheduled five-player Open X-Ball competition for 24–25 January 2009.[1] The organisers announced its postponement on 14 January, before the scheduled dates.[2]

Announced plans

[edit]

On 25 November 2008, the account KF, posting as MXball staff on LiveTheSport, presented the tournament as part of a revived MXball project and directed teams to register through the APPA.[1]

A further announcement by KF on 6 January 2009 described a reduced programme with the following advertised arrangements:[1]

Item Announced arrangement
Dates 24–25 January 2009
Division Open
Format Five-player X-Ball
Entry fee US$500
Cash prize fund US$24,000, covering first to fifth places
Registration APPA

The update also stated that PSP professional referees were expected to officiate and that Aeroméxico was offering travel discounts.[1] These were announced provisions for the proposed event, rather than evidence of services delivered at a completed tournament.

Postponement

[edit]

On 14 January 2009, the MXball promotion-staff account Takas@mxball3 posted a notice on PBNation announcing that MXball's sporting directors had decided to postpone the event because of the financial situation. The notice expressed an intention to pursue the event again but supplied no replacement dates.[2]

On 15 January, KF explained on LiveTheSport that the number of paid teams had not increased sufficiently, substantial expenditure had already been incurred and changes to the programme had failed to attract an adequate response. He described the decision as a cancellation, while leaving open another attempt if conditions became suitable.[3]

The recovered records therefore document an announced tournament followed by postponement and cancellation statements. They do not establish that the proposed January competition was played, that the advertised prizes were awarded or that a rescheduled edition took place.
