Ugly Ducklings is a Danish tournament paintball team associated with Odense, Denmark. The team became an established European professional competitor during the early Millennium Series era, reaching major tournament finals in 2000 and 2001. A Danish sports research report also credits Ugly Ducklings with winning an international seven-player world championship organised by the IPPA.[1][2][3]

The original team's history is closely associated with Copenhagen Ducks, although the Ugly Ducklings name has continued to appear separately in European tournament competition.[1][6][7]

History

[edit]

Early years

[edit]

Ugly Ducklings originated in the Danish tournament paintball community around Odense Paintball.[1]

A December 2012 report published by Denmark's Idrættens Analyseinstitut (Danish Institute for Sports Studies) identified Ugly Ducklings as one of Denmark's internationally successful paintball teams.

The report credited the team with winning a seven-player world championship organised by the IPPA. The precise year of that championship was not specified.[1]

Millennium Series competition

[edit]

By 2000, Ugly Ducklings was competing in the professional division of the Millennium Series against leading European and American teams.

At the 2000 Campaign Cup in London, the team reached the professional finals and finished second behind Avalanche. Russian Legion finished third.[2]

Ugly Ducklings remained competitive during the 2001 season.

At the Joy Masters tournament near Stockholm, Sweden, in August 2001, the team reached the professional finals alongside Shockwave UK, All Americans and Russian Legion.

Ugly Ducklings finished fourth, with Shockwave UK winning the tournament.[3]

The team also participated in the 2002 Campaign Cup, competing in the professional division against American and European opponents.[4]

At the 2004 Millennium Series tournament in Málaga, Spain, Ugly Ducklings finished fourth in Division 1, behind Texas Storm, Dorian Golak 1 and Kellys.[5]

Relationship with Copenhagen Ducks

[edit]

The historical relationship between Ugly Ducklings and Copenhagen Ducks is documented in the 2012 Danish Institute for Sports Studies report.

The report describes Copenhagen Ducks as the former Ugly Ducklings, stating that the team had changed its name while competing in the Millennium Series Champions Paintball League.[1]

However, a contemporary entry list for the 2005 Millennium Series Paris World Cup recorded Copenhagen Ducks in the Champions League and Ugly Ducklings in Division 1.

This demonstrates that both names were being used simultaneously in tournament competition by 2005. The precise organisational relationship between the two entries has not been established from the available records.[6]

Later competition

[edit]

The Ugly Ducklings name remained active in European tournament paintball.

A team registered under the name Ugly Ducklings, with Odense listed as its home town, appears in PBLeagues records from 2016 onwards. The registration date does not establish the team's original founding date or continuity of its roster.[7]

At the 2019 NXL Europe Prague Open, Ugly Ducklings won Division 2 X-Ball, finishing first among 21 teams.

In 2022, the team placed third among 32 teams in Division 3 at the NXL European Championships.

Ugly Ducklings subsequently competed in the Semi-Pro division, finishing fourth at the 2024 British Invitational and sixth at the 2024 NXL European Championships.

The team continued in Semi-Pro competition in 2025, finishing tenth at the European Championships.[7]
