Rob Maddox is a New Zealand paintball player, writer and former sporting administrator associated with competitive paintball in Auckland during the 1990s and early 2000s. He played for Kamo Karzi, contributed tournament reports to Paintball.co.nz and served as secretary of the New Zealand Paintball Players Association (NZPPA).[1][2][3]

His contemporary reports on the New Zealand Paintball Nationals provide historical records of tournament paintball in New Zealand during the late 1990s.

Paintball career

[edit]

Maddox competed with Kamo Karzi, an Auckland-based tournament paintball team also recorded under the spelling Kamokarzi.

The team participated in major New Zealand tournaments during the 1990s, including competitions associated with the original National Paintball League.

At the 1997 New Zealand Paintball Nationals, held on 25–26 October at Actions Paintball Sports Arena in Te Atatū, Auckland, Kamo Karzi finished third overall with 818 tournament points.[1]

Maddox returned to the Nationals in October 1998, when Kamo Karzi finished 11th among 14 competing teams. He received the tournament's Best Flag Pull award for a flag pull during a game against Katipo One.[2]

Kamo Karzi continued appearing in the Valhalla National Rankings, including an 18th-place national ranking in 2000 and a tenth-place position in the October 2001 seven-man standings.[4][5]

These later team rankings do not independently establish Maddox's participation at every event.

Paintball.co.nz

[edit]

Maddox was associated with Paintball.co.nz, also known as New Zealand Paintball Online, an early internet resource for New Zealand's paintball community.

The website published tournament reports, competition results, field directories, articles and information about paintball organisations. It also operated the NZ Paintball Message Boards, providing an online discussion forum for players.[3]

A contemporary listing in the Mercenaries Star directory described the website as maintaining a field directory, moderated message board and online chat facility.[6]

Maddox's association with the website included contributing articles and involvement in its online community. The precise dates of his administrative responsibilities have not been established.

Tournament reporting

[edit]

Maddox wrote contemporary reports covering the 1997 and 1998 New Zealand Paintball Nationals.[1][2]

His reports documented participating teams, tournament results, organisers, refereeing and incidents during competition.

The articles provide historical accounts of New Zealand tournament paintball during the period when the original National Paintball League was operating.

New Zealand Paintball Players Association

[edit]

Maddox served as secretary of the New Zealand Paintball Players Association (NZPPA).

In February 2004, he published an article titled What has the NZPPA done for me? through Paintball.co.nz.[3]

Writing as a former secretary and continuing member, Maddox discussed the association's activities concerning paintball marker regulation, compressed-air equipment, tournament standards and sporting administration.

He also addressed efforts to establish consistent competition rules and improve cooperation between regional paintball communities.

The article represented Maddox's personal account rather than an official statement from the association.

His precise term as secretary has not been established.

Historical documentation

[edit]

Maddox's tournament reports and articles were part of the early online documentation of competitive paintball in New Zealand.

Material from Paintball.co.nz survives in part through the Internet Archive, including an archived articles index containing publications from 2003 and 2004.

The original URLs of Maddox's 1997 and 1998 Nationals reports have not been recovered, although their contents have been preserved in historical research transcriptions.
