The 2013 PSP West Coast Open was a Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) tournament held from 16–18 August 2013 at the Ab Brown Sports Complex in Riverside, California, United States. It was the fourth event of the 2013 PSP season.[1][2]

Tampa Bay Damage won the professional Champions division, defeating Edmonton Impact 7–2 in the final. upTon 187 cRew won Challengers, with Chicago Aftershock finishing second.[4]

Venue and formats

[edit]

The event took place on the soccer fields at Ab Brown Sports Complex. PSP's announcement described it as the league's first tournament in Southern California since 2007. Competition ran from 16–18 August, with the accompanying trade show opening on 15 August.[2]

Professional Champions and Challengers played RaceTo-7. Divisions 1 and 2 played RaceTo-5, while Divisions 3 and 4 played RaceTo-4. Additional competitions included divisional RaceTo-2 and open pump RaceTo-2.[1]

Professional competition

[edit]

Champions

[edit]

Tampa Bay Damage defeated Edmonton Impact 7–2 in the final. Contemporary coverage attributed Damage's success to opening eliminations and control of the middle of the field.[4]

Moscow Red Legion finished third and Houston Heat fourth.[3]

Challengers and relegation

[edit]

upTon 187 cRew and Chicago Aftershock finished first and second in Challengers. Both earned promotion to Champions for the 2013 PSP World Cup. Omaha Vicious and Trenton Topgun Union were relegated to Challengers for that event.[4]

Marker-velocity penalties

[edit]

The Challengers semi-final between TonTons Flingueurs and Chicago Aftershock involved penalties for markers exceeding the permitted velocity. Contemporary reporting reproduced statements from TonTons and PSP representative Lane Wright.[5]

Wright confirmed that four TonTons markers and two Aftershock markers exceeded 300 feet per second. He stated that the equipment examination found no evidence of intentional modification to gain an unfair advantage, while describing the conduct as unsafe and subject to further sanctions.[5]
