The 2011 NPPL Huntington Beach Open, also promoted as the Surf City USA Open, was the opening event of the 2011 National Professional Paintball League season. It took place from 1–3 April 2011 on the beach at Huntington Beach, California. San Diego Dynasty won the professional division. [1][2]

Event

[edit]

The tournament continued the NPPL's Huntington Beach event tradition, which began in 2003. The competition included professional and amateur seven-player divisions, Division 4 five-player competition and five-player pump competition. [1][2][3]

WARPIG reported 16 professional teams, 76 amateur seven-player teams, 35 five-player teams and 15 pump teams. [1]

The event received live coverage through ESPN3. The league's advance publicity also advertised a public trade show, professional player appearances, grandstand seating and VIP tickets. [1][2]

Professional competition

[edit]

San Diego Dynasty won the professional tournament. Planet Eclipse's contemporary report confirmed Edmonton Impact's third-place finish. Chicago Legend finished fourth. [1][4][5]

Ryan Greenspan's published career record identifies the Huntington Beach victory as Dynasty's 50th professional tournament win. [6]

Results

Professional

Place Team Source
1 San Diego Dynasty [1][4]
3 Edmonton Impact [4]
4 Chicago Legend [5]

Amateur divisions

[edit]

The following results are reconstructed from the NPPL's archived championship and consolation brackets. [3]

Division First Second Third Fourth
Division 1 seven-player Seattle Siege Warped Army Critical Wrecking Crew Impact Echo
Division 2 seven-player Capital Edge Fuzion Paintballgateway.com UXP Tombstone Marine Team One
Division 3 seven-player DBSpaintball.com TCP H8 Factory Minions Chicagoland Paintball
Division 4 five-player Sacramento Royals Obnoxious Nickles Centermass Hawaii RIT Tigers Orange
Pump five-player LA Hitmen.com Xandata Total Greif Blitz

The archived sheet incorrectly labels the losing championship finalists in Division 3 and Division 4 as fourth. Their positions as runners-up follow from the championship pairings and the first-place teams recorded in those brackets. Planet Eclipse independently confirmed Warped Army's second place in Division 1. [3][4]

Additional competition

[edit]

LA Hitmen's contemporary team blog reported that Derrick Obatake won the event's Spyder One-on-One Challenge. [7]
