The 2003 NPPL Huntington Beach Open was a seven-player paintball tournament held from 7 to 9 February 2003 in Huntington Beach, California, United States. It opened the NPPL Super 7 World Series and was the first tournament produced by Pure Promotions, WDP's newly formed event-production company.[1]

San Diego Dynasty won Professional, Evil Factory won Amateur, Vicious won Novice and Team RM won Rookie.[2][3]

Venue and organisation

[edit]

Five inflatable-bunker fields were constructed on the beach beside Huntington Beach Pier. A central field had spectator grandstands and facilities for television production. The beachfront parking and park areas accommodated the trade exhibition.[1]

Joy Division players and independently hired referees officiated together, with Joy Division supplying each field's head referee. The event was dedicated to the memory of Maurice Gibb.[1]

An organisers' press release recorded 91 participating teams, US$35,000 in cash and US$90,000 in prizes. Dynasty received US$20,000 for winning Professional.[4]

Competition format

[edit]

The event used seven-player competition and incorporated elements of the Millennium Series rules. Eight teams advanced to the quarter-finals in Professional, Amateur and Rookie, with sixteen advancing in Novice.[1]

Four teams per division progressed to paired semi-finals. Semi-finals and placement finals used a best-of-three format, with separate contests deciding first–second and third–fourth places.[1]
