The 1998 NPPL Portland Open was a National Professional Paintball League tournament held at Enchanted Acres Paintball Park in Scappoose, near Portland, Oregon, from 28 to 30 August 1998. Jointly produced by Bad Boyz Toyz and DYE Precision, it replaced Atlanta on the NPPL schedule and attracted 26 teams. Competition was exclusively ten-man.[1][4]

Ground Zero won the professional division, Ground Zero Gold won Amateur A and Phantom Force won Amateur B.[2][3]

Competition format

[edit]

Each team played six preliminary games. Eight professional and eight Amateur A teams advanced to semi-finals, with two teams qualifying from each semi-final group. All four Amateur B entrants advanced directly to their final after the preliminary round.[1]

Semi-final qualification dispute

[edit]

Bushwackers challenged the Amateur A qualification procedure after scoring more points than one of the finalists. The team argued that the written rules required the four highest-scoring teams overall to advance, rather than two from each group.[1]

Ultimate judge Bill Cookston retained qualification by group, explaining that this maintained the procedure applied at earlier tournaments that season.[1]

Equipment restrictions

[edit]

Insurance requirements at Portland prohibited the Smart Parts Shocker's Turbo mode and the Automag RT's reactive trigger function. WARPIG's subsequent World Cup report confirmed these restrictions and identified Portland as the first NPPL event to prohibit cutting down protective masks.[5]
