The 1998 NPPL Chicago Open was a National Professional Paintball League paintball tournament held at The Badlandz in Illinois in June 1998. The event included professional ten-man competition and Amateur A and Amateur B divisions in both five-man and ten-man formats.[1][2][3]

Revolution won the professional ten-man title, while Bushwackers and Tidewater won the amateur ten-man divisions. Illusion and Addicted won the five-man divisions.[2][3]

Playing fields and weather

[edit]

The tournament used woodland, Hyperball and a field combining inflatable and fabric bunkers. WARPIG described the woodland layouts as wider than those familiar to some visiting teams, requiring adjustments to their usual tactics.[1]

Delivery problems delayed the planned inflatable field. During five-man competition, the layout instead combined USPL inflatable bunkers with fabric-and-aluminium obstacles associated with the Challenge Cup, producing a field containing 38 obstacles.[1]

Players faced heat and humidity. Thunderstorms before play on Friday brought down some netting and portable bunkers, which were restored before games began. Further storms on Saturday night were followed by cooler conditions for the ten-man semi-finals and finals.[1]

Ten-man competition

[edit]

Revolution won the professional final with 187 points, ahead of the All Americans, Bob Long's Ironmen and Lockout. Bushwackers won Amateur A with 214 points, while Tidewater won Amateur B with 156.[2]

The report also identified Chicago as Lockout's first tournament competing as professionals. The team reached the professional final and finished fourth.[1][2]
