VintageRex
VintageRex (also known as VintageRex.com) is an online paintball museum and historical equipment database founded by Carter Brown and Steve Novak. The website documents historical paintball markers, manufacturers, technical specifications, advertisements, instruction manuals and other archival materials.[1][2]
VintageRex is associated with the M.CarterBrown paintball forum and was developed to preserve information about early paintball equipment, particularly rare and discontinued markers.
History
[edit]Founding and development
[edit]VintageRex was created by Carter Brown, known online as Painthappy, and Steve Novak, known as Mister.44. Both were collectors of historical paintball equipment.[1][2]
According to the website's account of its origins, the founders identified a need for an organised online archive while comparing their personal collections and researching historical markers.
Novak contributed his experience in web design, information architecture and museum work, while Brown developed the database using his knowledge of Perl programming. The website's initial structure was reportedly completed in nine days.[1]
The earliest surviving entries in the website's administrative change log date to 5 May 2004, when Brown was adding and editing information about markers produced by PMI Sheridan, Tippmann, Carter Machine and other manufacturers.[3]
On 23 February 2005, eight curator accounts were added to the database, including an account associated with Bacci Paintball.[3]
On 23 February 2025, VintageRex announced its 20th anniversary. Although the anniversary identifies 2005 as the website's recognised founding year, its surviving administrative records demonstrate that database development was already taking place in 2004.[3][4]
Community contributions
[edit]VintageRex was designed as a collaborative archive, allowing collectors and enthusiasts to contribute photographs, historical information, magazine advertisements and technical documentation.
Authorised contributors, known as curators, assisted with maintaining and expanding the database.[3][4]
Novak, who also worked as a freelance writer and photographer for Action Pursuit Games magazine, subsequently retired from his role as a founder. Brown continued administering the website.[2]
Temporary unavailability
[edit]VintageRex was unavailable during part of 2020. In December of that year, members of the M.CarterBrown forum discussed the website's absence and reported using archived copies through the Internet Archive.[5]
Forum members reported that Brown retained copies of the website's files and that restoration was anticipated.[5]
VintageRex subsequently returned online. Its administrative change log records renewed maintenance activity beginning in February 2021, with further database updates recorded in subsequent years.[3]
The website remained accessible in 2026.
Museum collection
[edit]Paintball marker database
[edit]The principal feature of VintageRex is its searchable database of historical paintball markers.
Entries are organised by manufacturer, model and operating type, including stock-class, pump-action, semi-automatic and electronic markers.
Individual entries may include:
- Manufacturer and model information.
- Estimated year of introduction.
- Operating mechanism and valve design.
- Paintball calibre and gas source.
- Photographs of surviving equipment.
- Historical magazine advertisements and articles.
- Instruction manuals and patent documents.
- Original retail prices and estimated production quantities.
- Information about variants and accessories.[6]
The website's published statistics list 517 markers from 128 manufacturers, including 264 markers manufactured before 1990.[7]
The collection includes equipment from manufacturers such as Air Gun Designs, Brass Eagle, CCI, Carter Machine, Nelson Paint Company, Palmer's Pursuit Shop, PMI Sheridan, Tippmann and Worr Game Products.
Other equipment
[edit]In addition to paintball markers, VintageRex maintains exhibits documenting historical paintball accessories and equipment.
These include paintball loaders, protective masks, 12-gram CO2 cartridge changers and miscellaneous equipment.[8]
Paintball Blue Book
[edit]VintageRex also hosts the Paintball Blue Book, an equipment valuation database associated with the M.CarterBrown community.[9]
The guide lists estimated second-hand values for historical paintball markers according to their condition, generally categorised as fair, good or mint.
The database allows contributions from registered community members and identifies users who have submitted valuations.
The published figures are community estimates rather than verified transaction prices and should not be treated as definitive market values.
Historical significance
[edit]VintageRex provides a specialised reference archive for the identification and study of historical paintball equipment.
Its collection of photographs, advertisements, instruction manuals and technical specifications preserves documentation relating to manufacturers and products that may no longer be commercially available.
The website is particularly useful for researching early marker designs, identifying obscure models and comparing historical equipment variants.
As a community-maintained database, VintageRex contains information contributed by individual collectors. Some entries are incomplete, and estimated production dates or specifications may require verification against contemporary manufacturers' records and publications.
