The Bob Long Defiant, also known as Bob Long's Defiant, was an electronic paintball marker introduced around 1999 through an association between Bob Long and Indian Creek Design (ICD). Based on the ICD Bushmaster 2000, the Defiant incorporated modified body styling, a different grip frame and Autococker-compatible barrel threading.[1][2]

The Defiant was among the early electronic tournament markers associated with Bob Long, preceding the introduction of the Bob Long Intimidator.[3]

History

[edit]

Development

[edit]

The Defiant was developed during the late 1990s, when electronic paintball markers were becoming increasingly prominent in tournament competition.

Its underlying design was derived from the ICD Bushmaster 2000, introduced in spring 1999.[2]

The Defiant instruction manual, version 1.0, carries a 1999 copyright notice identifying Indian Creek Design, Inc. as the owner of the marker's manufacturing and intellectual property rights.[1]

The manual also identifies Bob Long in connection with the product.

The Defiant was marketed under Long's name, with modifications to the Bushmaster platform rather than an entirely separate operating system.[2]

Relationship to the Intimidator

[edit]

The Defiant preceded the Bob Long Intimidator, introduced around 2000.

It formed part of Long's early involvement with electronic tournament markers, following his work on customised mechanical markers and aftermarket components.[3]

The Intimidator subsequently became a separate marker family associated with Bob Long Technologies.

Design

[edit]

Operating system

[edit]

The Defiant used an electronically controlled, pneumatically operated stacked-tube system derived from the ICD Bushmaster 2000.

Its mechanism employed a solenoid-controlled ram to operate a poppet valve.[2]

The design incorporated separate high-pressure and low-pressure regulation systems.

The high-pressure regulator supplied the firing system, while the low-pressure regulator controlled the pneumatic components operating the ram.

Differences from the Bushmaster 2000

[edit]

Although mechanically similar to the Bushmaster 2000, the Defiant incorporated several distinguishing features.

These included:

  • Autococker-compatible barrel threading instead of the proprietary threading used on early Bushmaster 2000 markers.
  • Different body milling and external styling.
  • A modified grip frame incorporating finger grooves.
  • Differences in the sight rail and associated bolt-pin arrangement.

Historical collector documentation identifies these features as distinguishing characteristics of the original Defiant.[2][4]

The two markers shared much of their underlying mechanical and electronic architecture.

Electronic control

[edit]

The Defiant used an electronic trigger and control circuit to operate its firing mechanism.

The original design reflected the technology available to electronic tournament markers during the late 1990s.

Early Bushmaster-derived markers did not incorporate the electronic anti-chop eye systems subsequently adopted by many tournament markers.[2]

Later models

[edit]

The original Defiant should be distinguished from the later Defiant 2, another marker marketed under the Bob Long name.

The Defiant 2 was a subsequent product rather than simply a cosmetic variation of the original ICD-derived Defiant.

Historical documentation

[edit]

The original Defiant instruction manual survives through the Paintball Solutions technical archive.[1]

The document provides contemporary information about the marker's design, operation, maintenance and relationship with Indian Creek Design.

Historical examples of the Defiant are also documented in paintball equipment collections and technical restoration discussions.[2][4]
