Background

[edit]

Noor Hazmy Mohd Noor, commonly known as Laloque, was a mechanical engineering student and a member of Outrecs, a Division 2 team in the Malaysian National Paintball League (MY-NPL). [2][3]

He entered the fourth season of Nescafé Kick-Start with a proposal to establish an indoor paintball facility. The programme followed participants attempting to develop their proposed occupations or businesses. [3][4]

The paintball tournament formed part of Noor Hazmy's project during the programme. A contemporary announcement described the competition as a five-player event that would be featured in the television series. [1]

The event was presented by Nescafé and Noor Hazmy's group, which was associated with Team Outrecs. MY-NPL and the Malaysian Paintball Academy provided support. [1]

Competition

[edit]

The tournament took place at MAPAAC in Kompleks Sukan Astaka, Petaling Jaya.

The published announcement advertised Open and School divisions. The Open division was restricted to Malaysian Division 3 and Division 4 teams, with Division 1 and Division 2 players excluded. Competitors were required to use mechanical house markers. [1]

The announcement also advertised a separate School division, but the surviving results do not establish whether that division was contested. The results report instead describes the completed competition as the Novice division. [1][2]

Twenty-four teams took part, including teams from Perak, Pahang and Malacca. Television production crews recorded the tournament and its preparations for Nescafé Kick-Start. [2]

Shimi Army led the preliminary standings with 394 points. Ocean 18 placed second and Raptor placed third during the preliminary stage. Sixteen teams advanced to the knockout rounds. [2]

Planet 2 secured the final knockout place after a one-on-one match against Echoes. During the later knockout rounds, AMP SIN-X eliminated OLX before defeating Shimi Army in the semi-final. Raptor defeated Planet 1 in the other semi-final. [2]

AMP SIN-X and Raptor met in the final. The championship was decided through a one-on-one contest, with AMP SIN-X taking first place. [2]

Nescafé Kick-Start outcome

[edit]

Noor Hazmy was named the winner of the fourth Nescafé Kick-Start competition on 20 April 2008.

He received RM150,000 towards his proposal to establish an indoor paintball facility in either Subang Jaya or Shah Alam. Contemporary reporting stated that 53,000 people had auditioned for the programme, with seven selected before the competition was reduced to four finalists. [3][4]

The available sources establish that Noor Hazmy won the programme with his indoor-paintball proposal. They do not establish from this evidence alone when or where the proposed facility subsequently opened.
