1987 Sat Cong Village Challenge Cup
The 1987 Sat-Cong Village Challenge Cup was a Southern Californian paintball tournament held at Sat-Cong Village in Corona, California, from 29 August to 11 October 1987. Eleven teams participated in the six-week elimination competition.[1][2]
Wolf Pack won the tournament, defeating the Kamikaze Shooters in a rain-affected final. KMA reached the semi-finals, while Kamikaze Shooters advanced directly from the second round to the final through a bye.[2]
Organisation
Sat-Cong Village announced the Challenge Cup as its first annual tournament. An organisational meeting was held on 22 August 1987, during which team representatives received a tournament rules handbook and the opening-round draw was conducted.[1]
The competition was organised as a knockout tournament, with most matches consisting of up to three games. Games could be decided by flag capture or by the number of surviving players. If a match remained tied, the teams selected a captain or co-captain for a fifteen-minute one-on-one play-off. A player could win the play-off by eliminating the opponent or capturing the flag and leaving through the field entrance. If the play-off remained undecided, the match was awarded according to the teams' overall body count.[1]
Markers were inspected and chronographed before games. The venue imposed a maximum velocity of 300 feet per second.[2]
The winning team was awarded a four-foot trophy. A separate trophy bearing the team and captain's names was intended for display at Sat-Cong Village, while members of the championship team received individual trophies. The tournament was followed by an all-star game and an awards event known as Paintball Festival 87.[1][2]
Navarone was invited but did not participate because of a prior commitment to an out-of-state tournament.[1]

Kamikaze Shooters and Beerborn Rangers also required a play-off after each team won one game and the third finished as a draw. Kamikaze captain Mark Tora eliminated Beerborn co-captain Rene Contreras while Contreras was returning with the flag.[1]
Second round
| Date | Match | Winner | Deciding result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 September 1987 | Hello Kitty v Kamikaze Shooters | Kamikaze Shooters | Two games to nil |
| 19 September 1987 | Wolf Pack v Sat-Cong Walk-ons | Wolf Pack | Two wins and one draw |
| 20 September 1987 | KMA v Modern Marauders | KMA | Two flag captures |
Kamikaze Shooters defeated Hello Kitty twice by body count. Because of the structure of the draw, the victory advanced Kamikaze directly to the final.[2]
Wolf Pack defeated the Sat-Cong Walk-ons after winning the first and third games; the second game ended in a body-count draw. KMA defeated Modern Marauders with consecutive flag captures. These were reported as the first flag captures of the tournament.[2]
Semi-final
Wolf Pack faced KMA in the semi-final on 3 October. Wolf Pack won the first game by a body count of one and also narrowly won the second, advancing to face Kamikaze Shooters.[2]
KMA's semi-final appearance came in the team's first tournament.[2]
Final
The final between Wolf Pack and Kamikaze Shooters was played on 11 October 1987. The published tournament bracket had originally listed 10 October as the intended final date.[1][2]
Kamikaze Shooters led early in the first game. With approximately fifteen minutes remaining, Wolf Pack redirected most of its players into an attack along the riverside. The move broke through the Kamikaze position, and Wolf Pack won the game by body count.[2]
Heavy rain began during the second game, reducing visibility to less than 20 feet. Kamikaze advanced towards the village area, while Wolf Pack withdrew into defensive positions. Wolf Pack prevailed when the final body count was calculated and became the 1987 Challenge Cup champion.[2]
Wolf Pack captain Dan Lambert dedicated the victory to teammate John Barber, who had missed the final following a motorcycle accident.[2]
