Skirmish USA, also known as Skirmish Paintball, is an American commercial paintball field operator located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Its playing facilities are situated near Albrightsville and Jim Thorpe and include extensive woodland areas, constructed obstacles and dedicated tournament-style fields.[1]

Skirmish is particularly associated with the annual Invasion of Normandy (ION), a large-scale scenario paintball event based on the Allied landings in Normandy during the Second World War. The event has attracted thousands of participants and received national media coverage.[2][3]

Facilities

Skirmish operates an extensive outdoor paintball complex at 211 North Meckesville Road, Albrightsville, Pennsylvania.

The company advertises more than 700 acres of playing terrain and approximately 50 individual field layouts.[1]

Its playing areas incorporate natural woodland terrain and constructed features, including:

  • Forts and castles.
  • Villages and building complexes.
  • Bridges and streams.
  • Shipping containers.
  • Military-themed structures and vehicles.
  • Dedicated speedball fields.
  • Inflatable tournament bunkers.

The facility accommodates recreational groups, organised scenario games and other paintball activities.

Invasion of Normandy

The Invasion of Normandy is Skirmish USA's annual large-scale scenario paintball event.

The competition recreates elements of the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944, with participants divided into opposing forces representing the Allies and Axis.

The event incorporates themed objectives, command structures and extended periods of gameplay.

Skirmish advertises participation exceeding 4,000 players at the event.[2]

Historical coverage

On 1 August 2011, National Public Radio published a report by Rob Sachs documenting the Invasion of Normandy event.

The report described thousands of participants travelling to Pennsylvania for the scenario game.

It also documented the use of constructed landing craft, historical location names and organised command structures.[3]

Event activities

In addition to the main scenario game, Invasion of Normandy has incorporated:

  • Recreational and themed games.
  • On-site camping.
  • Paintball equipment exhibitions.
  • Retail and manufacturer displays.
  • Organised team activities.

The event has attracted players from across the United States and internationally.

Other scenario events

Skirmish USA also organises other themed scenario paintball events.

Its published event programme has included:

  • Stalingrad.
  • Battle for Berlin.
  • Battle for Britain.
  • Vietnam-themed games.
  • Tank Day.

These events use historical or fictional scenarios to provide objectives beyond conventional elimination-based paintball.[4]

Recreational paintball

Skirmish operates commercial paintball sessions for individuals and groups.

The facility provides rental equipment and organised games using different playing areas.

Its extensive field network allows groups to participate in woodland, urban-themed and speedball-style games.
