The 2003 PSP Los Angeles Open was a paintball tournament held from 5 to 9 March 2003 at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, California, United States. It opened the Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) championship series, combining five-player, ten-player and divisional X-Ball competitions with National Xball League (NXL) regular-season matches.[1]

Naughty Dogs won professional ten-player. Strange won Division 1 X-Ball, while Strange 2 won Division 2.[2][4]

Venue and schedule

The playing fields occupied the Fairplex horse-racing track's grass infield. Stadium lighting enabled evening play, while permanent awnings sheltered staging and vendor displays. Games began at 10:30 because the track was used for horse training earlier in the morning.[1]

Five-player competition took place on Wednesday and Thursday. Divisional X-Ball and NXL matches began on Thursday, followed by ten-player competition on Friday.[1]

Five-player results

Final-round totals are taken from WARPIG's contemporary scoreboard.[3]

Divisional X-Ball

This was PSP's first Division 1 and Division 2 X-Ball competition. Division 1 began with round-robin matches; Division 2 used double elimination.[1]

WARPIG recorded the following final placements.[4]

Place Division 1 Division 2
1 Strange Strange 2
2 Jax Warriors Twisted Factory
3 Brimstone Smoke Hurricanes
4 Nasty X TKO
5 Storm First Strike
6 — Tippmann Effect
7 — Drive
8 — NCPA Allstars

Division 1

Strange won all four round-robin matches. In the elimination stage, Strange defeated Nasty 12–2, while Jax Warriors defeated Brimstone Smoke 6–5. Strange then won the final 7–2 against Jax Warriors.[4]

Division 2

Twisted Factory defeated Strange 2 9–3 before the final. Strange 2 subsequently defeated Hurricanes 6–3 and won the championship match against Twisted Factory 7–4.[4]

National Xball League

The event hosted the NXL's second regular-season gathering, following the 2003 Mardi Gras Open. Miami Effect's 15–8 victory over Detroit Thunder on Thursday was described by WARPIG as the league's first night game.[1]

Selected documented results included:[1]

Day Team Score Opponent
Thursday Los Angeles Ironmen 15–10 Miami Effect
Thursday Chicago Aftershock 17–4 Detroit Thunder
Thursday New York Xtreme 8–7 Philadelphia Americans
Thursday Oakland Assassins 10–8 Baltimore Trauma

Sunday Oakland Assassins 10–9 Philadelphia Americans
Sunday Los Angeles Ironmen 12–7 Chicago Aftershock
Sunday Miami Effect 12–9 New York Xtreme

These matches contributed to season standings rather than determining a separate event champion. The scheduled Sunday match between Los Angeles and Detroit was cancelled.[1]
