Royal Rat Rangers
```mediawiki
Royal Rat Rangers, also known as RRR, was an American tournament paintball team based in South Florida. The team was established and captained by musician Maurice Gibb and competed in American and European tournaments during the early 2000s.[1][2]
The Royal Rat Rangers made their tournament debut at the 2001 Paintball World Cup in Orlando, Florida. Documented appearances included Pan Am Las Vegas, Beyond 2002, the Campaign Cup, the NPPL Atlantic City Open and the 2002 Paintball World Cup.[2][3][4][5]
History
Formation
The Royal Rat Rangers developed from a group of recreational players who practised together in South Florida.
Maurice Gibb had returned to paintball after discussing the sport with his friend and later teammate Frederick Retucci. Gibb described Retucci as someone who helped keep him organised and assisted with his involvement in the sport. They began playing at a Florida field that Gibb called Royal N' Tough, operated by Team Rage player Pete Bofill.[1]
In a January 2002 interview with Carmen Borgia for Crossfire Paintball Digest, Gibb said that approximately six people initially played together. Those who continued attending Sunday practices became the Royal Rat Rangers.[1]
Gibb identified players known as Ken, Dad and Jason among this early group, although the interview did not provide their complete names. Gibb served as captain, and the team also appointed replacement captains for tournaments he could not attend.[1]
2001 Paintball World Cup
The team's first tournament was the 2001 Paintball World Cup, held in Orlando, Florida, from 22 to 28 October.[1][2]
Contemporary tournament schedules list the Royal Rat Rangers in the 10-player preliminary competition. Gibb described the team's objective as gaining experience and learning from established tournament players. He identified communication, regular practice and coordinated movement as areas the team concentrated on before the event.[1][2]
Following the tournament, Gibb said that the team intended to enter as many events as possible and ultimately sought to progress towards professional competition.[1]
Pan Am Las Vegas
The Royal Rat Rangers competed in the novice 10-player division at Pan Am Las Vegas from 28 November to 2 December 2001.
The team recorded 214 points and finished 11th in its division.[3]
Beyond 2002
From 12 to 14 April 2002, the Royal Rat Rangers participated in the Beyond 2002 Extreme Sports and Music Festival at Bicentennial Park in Miami.
The team entered the rookie division and advanced from the preliminary round to the semi-finals. Royal Rat Rangers was eliminated during the semi-final stage, while Static AKA, Nemesis Raven B, PB R Us and Femmes Fatale advanced to the finals.[4]
Beyond 2002 combined tournament paintball with concerts and other sporting exhibitions. Gibb supported the concept of presenting paintball to a wider audience through combined entertainment events, although he believed that the music and tournament areas needed to be arranged so that one did not interfere with the other.[4]
Campaign Cup
The Royal Rat Rangers travelled to London for the 2002 Campaign Cup, part of the Millennium Series. The tournament was held at Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium.
The team reached the semi-finals of the novice division. Contemporary reporter Simon Stevens wrote that Royal Rat Rangers had improved considerably since its appearance at the previous year's World Cup. During a match against JCS Inferno, the team eliminated its opponents and Gibb completed the flag hang.[5]
Official Millennium Series rankings record Royal Rat Rangers finishing 13th at the Campaign Cup with 172 ranking points. As this was its only recorded Millennium Series appearance of the season, the team was ranked 51st in the final 2002 novice standings.[6]
NPPL Atlantic City Open
The Royal Rat Rangers competed in the rookie 10-player division at the 2002 NPPL Atlantic City Open, held at Egg Harbor, New Jersey, from 21 to 25 August.
The team scored 245 points during the preliminary round and did not advance to the semi-finals.[7]
2002 Paintball World Cup
Royal Rat Rangers returned to the Paintball World Cup in October 2002. In the rookie 10-player competition, the team recorded 403 preliminary-round points.[8]
Tournament schedules also record a Royal Rat Rangers entry in the World Cup's five-player competition.[9]
These records establish that the team remained active in tournament competition through October 2002.
Name and branding
On 22 October 2001, Gibb filed a United States trademark application for the Royal Rat Rangers name and emblem.
The submitted design depicted a rat holding a paintball marker inside concentric circles, with a crown above the emblem. The application covered paintball clothing and retail services involving paintball equipment, supplies and accessories.[10]
The application was published in the Official Gazette of the United States Patent and Trademark Office on 1 October 2002.[10]
Association with the Commander's Cup
During 2002, Gibb began developing plans for a tournament called the Commander's Cup. The proposed event was intended to combine competitive paintball with musical entertainment.
Following Gibb's death on 12 January 2003, the National Professional Paintball League adopted the Commander's Cup name for the final tournament of its inaugural Super 7 season. The 2003 NPPL Commander's Cup was held at Tamiami Park in Miami in November 2003.[11]
The memorial tournament commemorated Gibb's involvement in paintball but was organisationally separate from the Royal Rat Rangers.
Later history
Available tournament records document Royal Rat Rangers competition between October 2001 and October 2002.
The available evidence does not establish whether the team continued competing following Gibb's death or when it ceased operating. No formal dissolution date has been identified.
