New Zealand Premier Paintball League (NZPPL) was a New Zealand tournament paintball organisation documented during 2006 and 2007. It promoted the XPS tournament programme, including three-player, five-player X-Ball and seven-player competition formats.[1]

The organisation operated the website nzppl.com, which was subsequently used by the New Zealand Paintball Players League, a later tournament organisation associated with Jason Newport. The formal relationship between the two organisations has not been established.[1][2][3]

History

[edit]

Activities during 2006

[edit]

The New Zealand Premier Paintball League was operating under the NZPPL name by August 2006.

Its archived official website advertised three competitive formats:

  • Three-player tournaments
  • Five-player X-Ball
  • Seven-player tournaments

The website promoted an XPS competition programme and advertised registration for an event designated XPS VI on 9 September 2006.[1]

A contemporary discussion on the NZ Paintball Message Boards also advertised registration for XPS Series IV during August 2006.[4]

The relationship between the numbering of these competitions and the complete 2006 series calendar has not been established.

Media coverage

[edit]

In August 2006, the NZPPL website announced an arrangement with PB2X magazine to provide regular coverage of New Zealand tournament and recreational paintball.[1]

The organisation also maintained a photographic archive of the 2006 Big Boys Toys Paintball Tournament, held at Auckland Showgrounds on 11–12 November 2006.[6]

The tournament was promoted as the Marquis Condoms International Paintball Tournament and hosted by Paintball Adventure. Contemporary forum discussions document NZPPL's efforts to obtain the results for an article intended for PB2X magazine.[5]

The surviving evidence establishes media coverage by NZPPL but does not identify it as the tournament organiser.

An archived ezboard discussion from December 2006 records an NZPPL representative requesting final tournament standings for an article intended for PB2X.[5]

The NZPPL's subsequent website preserved a photographic gallery from the event.[6]

These sources document the organisation's media involvement but do not establish that it organised the Big Boys Toys tournament.

Activities during 2007

[edit]

The NZPPL continued promoting tournament paintball during 2007.

An official website calendar advertised the XPS 5 Man Podium Series opening event for 24–25 February 2007.[7]

The organisation's website also contained a page titled XPS II 2007.[8]

Complete tournament results for these events have not been recovered.

The league announced that Sup'AirBall was an official playing-field system and major sponsor. Its website described plans to vary inflatable-bunker layouts between events.[9]

Other promotional arrangements included sponsorship from The Rock radio station for the 2007 XPS Podium Series and accommodation arrangements with a Nelson holiday park.[9]

Website reconstruction

[edit]

During October 2007, the NZPPL website promoted plans for a 2008 season, including Super 5 and XPS competitions.[2]

An archived version of the website subsequently displayed a notice concerning reconstruction for 2008.[10]

The surviving records do not establish whether the proposed 2008 programme was completed or when the earlier organisation ceased operating.

Administration

[edit]

The NZPPL's 2007 website listed the contact telephone number 021 037 8454 and the email address info@nzppl.com.[2]

The same telephone number appeared on the archived website of Black Ops, a Nelson-based paintball equipment business, during 2005.[11]

This documents a connection between the earlier NZPPL website and Black Ops. It does not, by itself, establish the organisation's ownership or complete management structure.

The precise founding date and full list of officers have not been recovered.

Relationship with the New Zealand Paintball Players League

[edit]

The New Zealand Paintball Players League operated under the same NZPPL abbreviation during the early 2010s.

In a professional profile, Jason Newport stated that he established the Players League in 2010.[3]

By 2011, the later organisation was publishing tournament announcements on nzppl.com under the New Zealand Paintball Players League name.[12]

The records establish that both organisations used the same abbreviation and domain at different times.

They do not establish whether the later Players League was a formal continuation, reorganisation or separately established organisation.

For the later league and its tournament results, see New Zealand Paintball Players League.
