Sat-Cong Village announced the Challenge Cup as its first annual tournament. An organisational meeting was held on 22 August 1987, during which team representatives received a tournament rules handbook and the opening-round draw was conducted.[1]
An organisational meeting took place on 22 August 1987. Team representatives received rules handbooks, and a draw established the tournament bracket.[1]

The competition was organised as a knockout tournament, with most matches consisting of up to three games. Games could be decided by flag capture or by the number of surviving players. If a match remained tied, the teams selected a captain or co-captain for a fifteen-minute one-on-one play-off. A player could win the play-off by eliminating the opponent or capturing the flag and leaving through the field entrance. If the play-off remained undecided, the match was awarded according to the teams' overall body count.[1]

Markers were inspected and chronographed before games. The venue imposed a maximum velocity of 300 feet per second.[2]

The winning team was awarded a four-foot trophy. A separate trophy bearing the team and captain's names was intended for display at Sat-Cong Village, while members of the championship team received individual trophies. The tournament was followed by an all-star game and an awards event known as Paintball Festival 87.[1][2]

Kamikaze Shooters led early in the first game. With approximately fifteen minutes remaining, Wolf Pack redirected most of its players into an attack along the riverside. The move broke through the Kamikaze position, and Wolf Pack won the game by body count.[2]

Heavy rain began during the second game, reducing visibility to less than 20 feet. Kamikaze advanced towards the village area, while Wolf Pack withdrew into defensive positions. Wolf Pack prevailed when the final body count was calculated and became the 1987 Challenge Cup champion.[2]

Wolf Pack captain Dan Lambert dedicated the victory to teammate John Barber, who had missed the final following a motorcycle accident.[2]
