Iron City Classic was an American paintball tournament established in 2017 by professional player Tim Montressor. Held at Urban Assault Paintball in McDonald, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, the event revived traditional 10-player tournament competition using woodland, Hyperball and earth-mound playing fields.[1][2]

The tournament brought together former professional players, established teams and contemporary competitors in a format modelled on the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) competitions of the 1990s. The inaugural event attracted 18 teams in July 2017, expanding to 72 teams by 2019.[1][3][5]

Eighteen ten-player teams entered the inaugural tournament. The event brought together mechanical and electronic markers, with electronic markers restricted to 5.5 balls per second. Montressor organised the competition around playing environments associated with earlier tournament paintball.[1]

Establishment (2017)
Urban Assault had previously hosted National Professional Paintball League events. Its woodland, Hyperball and mound fields provided three different playing environments within the tournament.[1]

The Iron City Classic was established by Tim Montressor, a professional player associated with Tampa Bay Damage and several other leading American teams.

Montressor organised the tournament to revive elements of earlier competitive paintball, particularly the 10-player format that had been widely used before the development of modern X-Ball.

The inaugural tournament took place on 29–30 July 2017 at Urban Assault Paintball in McDonald, Pennsylvania.

The venue had previously hosted NPPL competitions and retained several playing fields associated with the sport's earlier professional era.

Eighteen teams participated in the inaugural event, including organisations with histories in professional tournament paintball.[1][2]

The competition incorporated three field types:

* Woodland: Natural terrain incorporating trees and vegetation.
* Hyperball: Artificial bunkers constructed from large corrugated plastic pipes.
* Mounds: Constructed earth bunkers associated with older NPPL tournament layouts.

The tournament permitted both mechanical markers and electronically operated markers, with electronic firing restricted to 5.5 balls per second.[1]

2017 inaugural tournament
The inaugural competition included teams such as Bad Company, Team Image, All Americans, Fox 4 Darkside, the Saberwolves and the Philly Americans.

Following the preliminary rounds, eight teams advanced to the semi-finals.

The four finalists were Bad Company, Philly Americans, Team Image '95 and Fox 4 Darkside.

The Philly Americans won the inaugural tournament, finishing ahead of Team Image '95 in the final standings.[2]

Expansion (2018–2019)
The second Iron City Classic took place on 4–5 August 2018 at Urban Assault Paintball.

The competition expanded to 54 teams and retained the traditional 10-player format.

San Antonio X-Factor won the tournament, finishing ahead of ac EMPIRE, Bad Company and Los Angeles Infamous.[3][4]

The third edition was held from 2 to 4 August 2019.

The competition again expanded, attracting 72 teams in its principal open 10-player division. A separate open five-player competition was also held.

The tournament was organised by Montressor and Russell Jackson, with more than 1,000 players attending according to an event report published by Bunker Kings.[6]

San Diego Dynasty won the open 10-player competition, finishing ahead of Team Image and the Philly Americans.

The five-player division was won by ac POWERHOUSE.[5]

Cancellation and return (2020–2021)
Tim Montressor died on 22 June 2020, aged 36.

The scheduled 2020 Iron City Classic was cancelled.

The tournament returned to Urban Assault Paintball from 30 July to 1 August 2021.

The 2021 competition included open 10-player and five-player divisions, with games held across woodland, Hyperball, mound and hybrid playing fields.[7]

Montressor Classic (2022–2023)
Following the tournament's return in 2021, subsequent events were recorded under names commemorating Tim Montressor.

The 2022 competition was listed as the ICC/Montressor Classic and took place in Clintondale, New York, from 29 to 31 July.

Master Blasters won the open 10-player division, finishing first among 18 teams.[8]

The 2023 event was listed as the Montressor Classic and took place in Newark, Illinois, on 29–30 July.[7]

Both competitions are included in the historical Iron City Classic event archive maintained by PBLeagues.[7]

Competition format
The Iron City Classic used a traditional tournament structure based on the 10-player competitions associated with earlier NPPL events.

Teams competed in individual games across multiple field types, with points awarded according to match results.

Unlike contemporary X-Ball, which uses repeated points within a timed match, the traditional format rewarded teams through individual game scores.

The event incorporated woodland, Hyperball and earth-mound playing environments, requiring competitors to adapt to different terrain and bunker configurations.

The original event permitted both mechanical and restricted-rate electronic markers, allowing competitors using different equipment platforms to participate in the same competition.[1]

Legacy
In 2022, the event was listed as the ICC/Montressor Classic. It took place at Paintball Sports New York in Clintondale, New York, from 29 to 31 July. The programme included open ten-player and five-player competitions.[3]

The Iron City Classic formed part of the renewed interest in traditional 10-player tournament paintball during the late 2010s.
Format
The original tournament used ten-player teams competing across woodland, Hyperball and mound fields. Mechanical markers competed alongside electronic markers operating under a reduced firing-rate limit.[1]

Its format attracted former professional competitors and teams associated with earlier generations of tournament paintball, while also providing opportunities for newer players to compete in the same environment.
Later programmes also included five-player competition.[3]

In a 2019 interview, former professional player Kevin Bredthauer credited Montressor's revival of the classic format with contributing to renewed interest in traditional competition.[9]

The International Classic Paintball League (ICPL), established separately in 2019, subsequently developed a broader programme of mechanical paintball tournaments using similar traditional formats.
