The 1998 National Three-Man Centre Flag Competition was a three-player paintball tournament held in Invercargill, New Zealand, during Queen's Birthday weekend. Four teams competed over one and a half days, with S.L.O.B.s and WarPigs reaching the final.[1]

Competition

[edit]

Teams played each opponent twice across the Hill and Moat fields, completing six matches each before the final. The fields measured approximately 100 by 50 metres. Teams attempted to capture a central flag and hang it at their opponents' starting position.[1]

Matches comprised three ends, each limited to five minutes. Teams played once from each starting position, with a coin toss determining the starting positions for the third end.[1]

The entrants were S.L.O.B.s and WarPigs from Invercargill, K.S.B. from Dunedin and The Last Boy Scouts from Christchurch. The Last Boy Scouts played four of their six matches with only two players.[1]

Results

[edit]

Ken Ryder's report published the following totals.[1]

Team Published points
S.L.O.B.s 291
WarPigs 278
K.S.B. 224
The Last Boy Scouts 90

S.L.O.B.s and WarPigs advanced to the final, with their scores reset to zero. The report describes a nine-point margin in that match but does not explicitly identify the winner or give the complete final score. K.S.B. finished third.[1]

The report's statement that the leading teams were separated by 22 points before the final conflicts with the published totals, which differ by 13 points. The totals above should not be read as the final match score.[1]

Awards

[edit]
  • Most Improved Player: Mark Anderson of WarPigs.[1]
  • Sportsmanship: B1 Meckle of The Last Boy Scouts.[1]
