The 1999 Northland Open was a paintball tournament held on 28 February 1999 at Omana Paintball Field in Northland, New Zealand. Nine teams competed across two divisions. Saints won with 476 points, six ahead of Saints Grey. Solidaire won Division Two and finished sixth overall.[1]
Venue and competition
[edit]The tournament used two wooded fields combining trees, undergrowth and constructed barricades. A nearby tower provided spectator viewing.[1]
Paint Contractors defeated Saints and recorded a maximum-score victory over Black Dragon. Solidaire, based at an indoor paintball field in Pakuranga, held out against Katipo. Shadow Hawks competed in its first multi-division tournament.[1]
Results
[edit]The contemporary report used “Saints Gold” as shorthand for the winning entry but explicitly stated that the name was not strictly accurate. The team is therefore listed here as Saints.[1]
| Overall position | Team | Division | Divisional position | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Saints | One | 1 | 476 |
| 2 | Saints Grey | One | 2 | 470 |
| 3 | Black Dragon | One | 3 | 455 |
| 4 | Paint Contractors | One | 4 | 423 |
| 5 | Katipo | One | 5 | 347 |
| 6 | Solidaire | Two | 1 | 323 |
| 7 | Ravens | Two | 2 | 256 |
| 8 | Crisis | Two | 3 | 196 |
| 9 | Shadow Hawks | Two | 4 | 11 |
Officials recalculated the results twice after finding blank entries in the score records. These were subsequently identified as scheduled byes, confirming that the original calculation was correct.[1]
Recognition
[edit]A sweatshirt donated by Tony Witheridge was intended to recognise Shadow Hawks' efforts. As the team had left before the prizegiving, it was instead presented to head marshal Stimpy for his organising and officiating work.[1]
