Decay of Nations is an annual American scenario paintball event held at SC Village in Chino, California. Organised by SC Village, the event features large-scale, objective-based woodsball competition between two fictional opposing armies, UNA and EKRON.

First documented in 2007, Decay of Nations developed into one of the largest scenario paintball events on the West Coast of the United States. The event uses more than 100 acres of playing fields and incorporates extended battles, armoured vehicles, specialised equipment and organised command structures.[1][2]

History

Origins

Decay of Nations developed from SC Village's earlier large-scale recreational paintball events, particularly Monsterball, which brought hundreds of players together across the facility's extensive playing fields.

SC Village identifies Monsterball as a predecessor to Decay of Nations, describing the latter as the modern continuation of its large-scale paintball event tradition.[1]

The earliest documented Decay of Nations event took place on 25–26 August 2007. The scenario team Psycho Clown Posse recorded its participation at SC Village during that weekend.[3]

The second edition was held from 22 to 24 August 2008, followed by Decay of Nations 3 in 2009 and Decay of Nations 4 in 2010.[3]

Expansion

By 2012, Decay of Nations had reached its sixth edition. That year's event, subtitled The World Is Yours, took place on 13–14 October at SC Village.

Contemporary promotional material described Decay of Nations as a major annual West Coast scenario event, attracting more than 1,000 participants and representatives of the paintball industry.[4]

The fictional conflict between the United North Americas and the Ekron Corporation had become an established feature of the event by this period.[4]

Decay of Nations 9 took place in 2015. Contemporary coverage by Eric Carr described a large weekend gathering involving scenario teams, camping and extensive use of the SC Village playing fields.[5]

The event continued through the following decade, with SC Village promoting Decay of Nations as its principal large-scale scenario game.

Recent editions

Decay of Nations 16 took place in 2023, incorporating a two-day scenario programme, camping and specialised gameplay involving approved props and armoured vehicles.[6]

The event's 19th edition, subtitled Uprising, was scheduled for 26–27 September 2026. The opposing armies were commanded by Mark Kressin for UNA and Todd Martinez for EKRON.[7]

Game format

Decay of Nations is based on a fictional conflict between two opposing forces:

  • UNA: The United North Americas, traditionally identified with the blue team.
  • EKRON: The opposing faction, traditionally identified with the red team.

Each army operates under a general and supporting command staff responsible for coordinating participants, distributing missions and directing battlefield operations.

The scenario is played across multiple connected fields, allowing participants to move between woodland areas, defensive positions and constructed environments.

Teams accumulate points by completing assigned objectives, controlling designated locations and participating in special missions.

Unlike conventional elimination-based paintball games, Decay of Nations uses a respawn system allowing eliminated participants to return to the battlefield through designated locations.[8]

Specialised equipment

Decay of Nations incorporates equipment and gameplay elements associated with large-scale scenario paintball.

These include paintball tanks, armoured suits known as mechs, shields, rocket launchers and other scenario props.

The use of such equipment is governed by specific event rules. Props and vehicles must be inspected and approved by event officials before entering play.

Armoured vehicles operate under separate elimination rules, including the use of approved foam projectiles to simulate anti-armour weapons.[8]

Event programme

The established event programme takes place over a weekend, with the principal scenario battles held on Saturday and Sunday.

Associated activities have included night games, camping, equipment demonstrations and a vendor area featuring paintball manufacturers and retailers.[2]

Venue

Decay of Nations is held at SC Village Paintball & Airsoft Park, located at 8900 McCarty Road in Chino, California.

The event uses more than 100 acres of interconnected playing fields. SC Village provides woodland terrain, constructed obstacles, defensive positions and military-style transport vehicles used during the event.[2]

The venue has hosted every documented edition of Decay of Nations.

Significance

Decay of Nations is one of the longest-running large-scale scenario paintball events in the western United States.

Its documented history extends from 2007 through at least 2026, with the organisers promoting it as the largest scenario paintball event on the West Coast.[2][7]

The event is particularly associated with its recurring fictional factions, large playing area, command-led gameplay and extensive use of customised scenario equipment.
