Tippmann World Challenge (TWC) was an American scenario paintball event held at Hell Survivors in Pinckney, Michigan. Organised by Hell Survivors in association with Tippmann Sports, the event featured large-scale woodsball competition between players using Tippmann paintball markers and an opposing team representing other equipment manufacturers. The event was established by the early 2000s and became a longstanding fixture of the American scenario paintball calendar. In 2015, the organisers introduced a revised format under the name GI Sportz World Challenge, expanding one team's eligibility to include markers from several brands owned by GI Sportz.[1] == History == === Early years === The Tippmann World Challenge developed from the longstanding relationship between Hell Survivors and Tippmann Sports. Hell Survivors had used Tippmann equipment since the 1980s, including the Tippmann SMG-60 and later rental markers. The venue's management maintained a close working relationship with the manufacturer.[1] The World Challenge was documented by 2001, with discussions of the event appearing on paintball forums in 2002.[2] The competition was distinguished by its unusual team selection system. Players were divided according to the manufacturers of their paintball markers rather than conventional team affiliation. The Tippmann team used Tippmann markers, while the opposing World team was open to players using other brands. === Growth during the 2000s === The Tippmann World Challenge became an established annual event at Hell Survivors, traditionally held in September. The ninth edition took place on 22β23 September 2007. Contemporary photographs and video coverage published by ZDS Paintball documented competition across several areas of the venue, including the Castle, Mitchell Crossing, the Meatgrinder and the Village. The World team won the 2007 event, ending a period of Tippmann victories dating back to 2003.[3] The event continued during the following years, with the 2010 edition taking place on 25β26 September.[4] === International expansion === In 2011, Hell Survivors and Tippmann Sports announced an international expansion of the event concept. The programme introduced smaller Tippmann Challenge events in other countries, providing opportunities for teams to qualify for the main event in Michigan. According to the organisers, selected four-player teams could win travel to the Tippmann World Challenge, event admission, Tippmann X7 Phenom markers and paintballs. The initiative was promoted by Hell Survivors president Dave Massey as a means of bringing international participants to the event.[1] === Fifteenth edition === The fifteenth Tippmann World Challenge took place on 28β29 September 2013. An official announcement published by Tippmann Sports described the event as a two-day competition involving participants from the United States and Canada. The game incorporated bunker capture objectives, armoured vehicle missions and organised command roles. Players could volunteer to serve as officers, assisting with battlefield planning and coordination. The event also featured a vendor exhibition and prize giveaways.[5] === GI Sportz World Challenge === In 2015, Hell Survivors and GI Sportz introduced a revised World Challenge format. The original Tippmann-only team was replaced by a broader GI Sportz team, incorporating markers from several brands within the manufacturer's portfolio. These included: * Tippmann * Empire Paintball * BT Paintball * JT Paintball * Spyder * Invert The opposing World team continued to represent markers from other manufacturers. The event was subsequently promoted as the GI Sportz World Challenge.[1] The revised event was held on 22β23 September 2018 and appeared on GI Sportz's official 2019 event calendar for 27β29 September. The 2020 event was advertised for 26β27 September, although this listing does not independently establish whether it took place.[6][7][8] == Game format == The original Tippmann World Challenge used a manufacturer-based team format. Players competed as two opposing forces: * Tippmann Team (Red): Players using Tippmann paintball markers. * World Team (Yellow): Players representing the opposing force, including those using markers manufactured by other companies. The World team was not restricted exclusively to non-Tippmann users. Contemporary player accounts indicate that Tippmann owners could also compete for the World team.[2] The competition used an extended big-game format similar to the Michigan Monster Game, another longstanding Hell Survivors event. Teams accumulated points through controlling designated objectives, capturing bunkers and carrying out assigned missions.[5] === Special missions and vehicles === The event incorporated special equipment and tactical options not normally found in conventional recreational paintball games. These included: * Paintball tanks providing mobile firepower. * Transport trucks moving participants to designated insertion locations. * Simulated aircraft insertions allowing players to enter areas behind opposing lines. * Special assault missions supporting attacks on fortified positions. Contemporary coverage of the 2007 event documented the use of tanks, military-style transport trucks and simulated aircraft insertions. The aircraft system involved groups of players moving together under special game rules, with participants becoming active when leaving the formation.[3] == Venue == The Tippmann World Challenge was held at Hell Survivors in Pinckney, Michigan. The venue featured extensive woodland terrain, constructed fortifications and several established battlefield locations. These included the Castle, the Village, Firebase Bravo, Mitchell Crossing and the Meatgrinder.[3] Hell Survivors also provided camping, staging areas, equipment vendors and compressed-air filling facilities for major events. The venue was operated for many years by Dave Massey and Ed Stapleton, who retired in 2024.[1] == Significance == The Tippmann World Challenge was distinguished from other major scenario paintball events by its use of equipment brands to determine the opposing armies. Rather than organising participants around fictional military factions, historical scenarios or established regional teams, it created a direct competition between Tippmann users and players representing the wider marker market. The event also reflected Tippmann's longstanding association with recreational and scenario paintball. Its expansion into an international qualification programme in 2011 and subsequent development into the GI Sportz World Challenge in 2015 demonstrate how the original format was adapted to changes in paintball equipment ownership and marketing.[1] == See also == * Scenario paintball * Woodsball * Hell Survivors * Tippmann * GI Sportz * Michigan Monster Game * Living Legends == References == # Hell Survivors β History of Hell Survivors, including the Tippmann World Challenge and GI Sportz World Challenge # Automags.org β Tippmann World Challenge discussion, August 2002 # ZDS Paintball β Tippmann/World Challenge IX, photographs, videos and event report, 22β23 September 2007 # PR Newswire β Majesco Entertainment Kicks Off Greg Hastings Paintball 2 Tour of Duty 2010, 28 April 2010 # Tippmann Sports β Tippmann World Challenge September 28th & 29th, official announcement, 12 August 2013 # [https://mcsus.com/blogs/events/g-i-sportz-world-challenge-2018-september-22 MCS β G.I.
