Tim Montressor (1984 β 22 June 2020), also known as Timothy L. Montressor, was an American professional paintball player, tournament organiser and paintball industry representative. He competed for several leading professional teams, including the Philadelphia Americans, Edmonton Impact, Houston Heat and Tampa Bay Damage. He was also the founder of the Iron City Classic, a tournament credited with helping revive interest in traditional ten-player paintball.[1][2] Montressor was recognised for his versatility, tactical understanding and longevity in professional competition. Over his career, he played several positions, including snake, centre and support roles. His professional involvement extended beyond tournament play into equipment development, international sales, coaching and event organisation.[3] Montressor worked with paintball manufacturers including Smart Parts, DLX Technology and GOG Paintball. His work involved the promotion and development of equipment associated with the Luxe and Shocker marker families.[1][3] In 2017, Montressor established the Iron City Classic at Urban Assault Paintball in McDonald, Pennsylvania. The event revived elements of classic ten-player tournament paintball, including woods, hyperball and mound fields. Its success helped encourage renewed interest in mechanical paintball and traditional tournament formats.[4] Montressor died on 22 June 2020, aged 36. He was subsequently inducted into the Paintball Hall of Fame in 2021 and was also recognised by Iconic Paintball's Hall of Icons.[5][6] {| class="wikitable" |+ Tim Montressor |- ! The period saw the development of increasingly specialised tournament formats, including seven-player competition and X-Ball. Professional players were expected to combine technical skills, tactical understanding and physical conditioning. Montressor developed into a versatile competitor capable of playing several different positions. === Early professional teams === Montressor's family recalled that he competed for teams based in Detroit, Philadelphia, Edmonton, Dallas and Tampa.[5] His early professional career included an association with the Philadelphia Americans, also known as the All Americans. The complete chronology of his earliest team affiliations requires further reconstruction from tournament rosters. == Professional career == === Philadelphia Americans === Montressor competed for the Philadelphia Americans, one of the established professional organisations in American tournament paintball. The team was associated with the broader All Americans organisation and the development of professional X-Ball. Montressor's participation formed part of his progression through major professional teams. === Edmonton Impact === Montressor subsequently competed for Edmonton Impact. Impact developed into one of the most successful professional organisations in modern tournament paintball. Montressor's association with the team is documented in contemporary league media and historical player assessments.[1][2] His experience with Impact contributed to his reputation as a versatile professional player. === Houston Heat === Montressor also competed for Houston Heat. The team was among the leading professional X-Ball organisations during the 2010s. His association with Houston Heat is documented in a 2020 interview published by Major League Paintball PLUS.[2] === Tampa Bay Damage === Montressor later competed for Tampa Bay Damage. He remained associated with the team during the final period of his professional career. In a 2020 league interview, he was identified as a Damage player while discussing the upcoming NXL season and his tournament promotion activities.[7] === Final professional tournament === PBLeagues records Montressor as a participant in the 2020 NXL Las Vegas event, held on 8 March 2020.[8] The database associates him with a second-place result. This was among the final major professional tournaments held before his death in June 2020. == Playing style == === Versatility === Montressor was recognised for his ability to play multiple positions. Iconic Paintball described his development from an elite snake player into centre and support roles.[3] This versatility allowed him to adapt as tournament strategies changed. === Snake position === Earlier in his professional career, Montressor was recognised for his effectiveness in the snake. The position required speed, technical ability and an understanding of attacking opportunities. === Centre and insert roles === Montressor subsequently became known for his tactical play from centre and insert positions. These roles required communication, field awareness and the ability to support forward players. === Tactical understanding === Historical assessments emphasised Montressor's decision-making. He was recognised for positioning himself effectively and understanding how games developed. His ability to adapt to different roles contributed to his longevity in professional competition. == Paintball industry career == === Smart Parts === Montressor worked within the paintball equipment industry for approximately two decades. His career included an association with Smart Parts, a major American manufacturer of paintball markers and equipment. Smart Parts was associated with the development of the Shocker and other influential electronic markers. === DLX Technology === Montressor subsequently became associated with DLX Technology. DLX developed the Luxe family of electronic tournament markers. Montressor worked internationally representing the company's products. His responsibilities involved relationships with players, dealers, distributors and tournament organisers. === GOG Paintball === Montressor was also associated with GOG Paintball. GOG continued the development and marketing of equipment associated with the Shocker name. === International representation === Montressor travelled extensively for his industry work. His family described his international travel as one of the defining experiences of his life.[5] === Asia === Montressor participated in Asian tournament paintball. In February 2013, he was announced as a member of an American Dream Team assembled for the opening event of the Paintball Asia League Series in Bangkok, Thailand.[9] The announced roster included: * Oliver Lang * Yosh Rau * Damien Ryan * Bobby Aviles * Jerry Desvarieux * Tim Montressor The team brought together professional players from several leading American organisations. === Australia === Montressor also travelled to Australia for tournament paintball. Following his death, Australian players recalled his participation in Super 7s competition and his relationships with local players.[10] === International coaching === Montressor's international work involved assisting players and teams. His activities helped connect emerging paintball communities with established professional competitors and equipment manufacturers. == Iron City Classic == === Origins === Montressor founded the Iron City Classic to revive traditional ten-player tournament paintball. The event combined elements of classic tournament formats with contemporary equipment and professional organisation. The tournament was intended to provide an opportunity for players from different generations to compete together. === First event, 2017 === The inaugural Iron City Classic took place on 29β30 July 2017 at Urban Assault Paintball in McDonald, Pennsylvania.[4] The venue had historical connections to tournament paintball during the 1990s and early 2000s. The tournament used three types of playing fields: * Woods * Hyperball * Mounds This arrangement reflected the diversity of field types used in earlier ten-player competition. === Mechanical and electronic paintball === The original Iron City Classic brought together teams using different equipment technologies. The event was designed to encourage participation across generations rather than separating players entirely by equipment type. Mechanical paintball subsequently became an increasingly important part of the event's identity. === Second event, 2018 === The second Iron City Classic took place on 4β5 August 2018. A contemporary report by Inception Designs recorded 34 participating teams and more than 600 players.[4] The event attracted former professional players, contemporary professional teams and amateur competitors. The final featured San Antonio X-Factor against Bad Company. San Antonio X-Factor won the event. === Tournament organisation === Montressor was closely involved in organising the event. Contemporary accounts described his attention to scheduling, field operations and the player experience. The event became known for bringing together competitors from different periods of paintball history. === 2019 event === The Iron City Classic continued in 2019. PBLeagues records the tournament as taking place from 2β4 August 2019.[11] The event further established the Iron City Classic as a major ten-player tournament. === Influence on paintball === The Iron City Classic helped renew interest in traditional tournament formats. It demonstrated that ten-player paintball could attract both current professional players and veterans of earlier competition. The event also contributed to the broader revival of mechanical tournament paintball. == Mechanical paintball revival == === Historical background === During the 1990s, ten-player paintball was a major tournament format. Teams competed on woods, hyperball and other field types. As professional paintball shifted toward smaller teams and electronic X-Ball formats, traditional ten-player competition became less prominent. === Revival === Montressor recognised an opportunity to reconnect different generations of players. The Iron City Classic recreated aspects of classic tournament paintball while incorporating modern event organisation. === Influence on later tournaments === The success of the Iron City Classic helped demonstrate demand for mechanical and classic-style competition. The revival contributed to the wider development of events and leagues using traditional formats. === Community participation === The event attracted former professional players who had been less active in contemporary tournament paintball. It also provided younger competitors with opportunities to play alongside established veterans. == Media appearances == === Major League Paintball interview === In 2020, Montressor appeared in an extended interview published by Major League Paintball PLUS.[2] The interview covered his professional playing career, industry work and the Iron City Classic. The programme ran for approximately 70 minutes. === Live Show with Matty Marshall === Montressor also appeared in a 2020 discussion with commentator Matty Marshall.[7] Topics included: * The 2020 NXL Las Vegas event * Tampa Bay Damage * The Iron City Classic * Ten-player tournament paintball * The state of professional NXL competition These recordings are important primary sources for documenting his views during the final year of his life. == Death == === 22 June 2020 === Montressor died on 22 June 2020 at Excela Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He was 36 years old. This article does not speculate about the circumstances. == Memorials == === Tim Montressor Memorial Fund === Following Montressor's death, members of the paintball community established a memorial fundraising campaign. The campaign was organised by Tom Fox and Jason Edwards.[12] Its stated goal was to commission a life-size bronze statue of Montressor. === Proposed memorial === The organisers proposed installing the statue at Urban Assault Paintball. The location was chosen because of its association with the Iron City Classic. The memorial was intended to recognise both Montressor's playing career and his contribution to the revival of classic tournament paintball. === Fundraising === The campaign established a fundraising goal of $50,000. The publicly accessible fundraiser subsequently recorded more than $60,000 raised. The existence and final installation status of the proposed statue should be verified separately. === Memorial tournament === The organisers also announced a seven-player memorial tournament at Central Florida Paintball for 18 July 2020. He competed for several leading professional organisations. === International development === His extensive travel and industry work helped connect players and businesses across different countries. === Equipment industry === Montressor contributed to the promotion and development of equipment associated with Smart Parts, DLX and GOG. === Ten-player paintball === The Iron City Classic became his most significant contribution to tournament organisation.
