SC Arenas is a dedicated tournament paintball facility forming part of SC Village in Corona, California, United States. Developed in the late 1990s, the facility incorporated purpose-built playing fields, protective netting and elevated spectator walkways designed to accommodate organised paintball competition.[1][2] SC Arenas became associated with the development of Hyperball and hosted professional and amateur tournaments sanctioned by the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) and other competition organisers.[1][3] == History == === Development === SC Arenas was developed within the SC Village paintball complex during the late 1990s. Contemporary reporting identifies Brahim Estephan, a member of the professional Ironmen team, as one of the principal designers. Estephan worked with SC Village management, including Dennis and Giovani, to develop a purpose-built tournament facility.[1] The complex incorporated playing fields within recessed areas, with connecting walkways positioned above the playing surfaces. Protective netting separated the playing fields from designated spectator and access areas. The design allowed spectators to observe tournament games from elevated positions while reducing the need to enter active playing areas.[2] === Hyperball === SC Arenas became closely associated with the development and use of Hyperball fields. Hyperball uses large plastic drainage pipes and similar cylindrical structures as artificial bunkers. The obstacles can be positioned vertically or horizontally to create different playing layouts. SC Village's historical account identifies SC Arenas as an important venue in the development of Hyperball as a tournament field format.[3] The facility provided a training environment for professional teams, including the Ironmen, San Diego Dynasty and Avalanche.[3][4] === NPPL tournaments === SC Arenas hosted national tournament competition during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The 2002 NPPL Los Angeles Open took place at SC Arenas from 15 to 17 March. The event included professional and amateur ten-player competition, alongside five-player divisions. San Diego Dynasty won the professional ten-player division, while the Shocktech Factory Team won the amateur five-player division.[2] Contemporary WARPIG reporting described SC Arenas as an established West Coast venue within the NPPL national tournament series. === Safety and spectator facilities === The original SC Arenas design included elevated walkways protected by netting. During the early period of operation, these areas allowed spectators to observe games without wearing paintball goggles where the protective arrangements permitted it. By 2001, changes to NPPL and event insurance requirements had introduced stricter expectations for protective netting. SC Village subsequently modified the walkways for the 2002 tournament season. The changes were documented in WARPIG's contemporary report on the 2002 NPPL Los Angeles Open.[2] === Regional tournament competition === SC Arenas also hosted regional tournament events. In 2005, the facility was used for a Proto XPSL competition organised as part of the Southern California tournament circuit. WARPIG's contemporary report described the venue's development and its relationship with the wider SC Village complex.[1] The facility continued to be used for tournament training and competition after inflatable bunkers became the standard format at major professional events. == Field design == The original SC Arenas complex incorporated several features intended specifically for tournament paintball: * Artificial-bunker playing fields. * Protective netting separating playing and spectator areas. * Elevated walkways connecting fields. * Recessed playing surfaces. * Dedicated tournament and training facilities. These arrangements distinguished SC Arenas from the woodland and recreational fields elsewhere within SC Village.[1][2] == Relationship with SC Village == SC Arenas forms part of the wider SC Village paintball facility. SC Village was established during the 1980s and became associated with early developments in Speedball. The original SC Village speedball field was introduced in 1989 and used a relatively small playing area with artificial bunkers and central scoring horns.[5] The later SC Arenas complex developed this approach into a dedicated tournament facility designed to accommodate organised competition, team training and spectators. == See also == * SC Village * Hyperball * Speedball * Paintball field * Ironmen * San Diego Dynasty * National Professional Paintball League == References == # [https://www.warpig.com/paintball/tournament/panam/2005/corona/ WARPIG, "2005 Proto XPSL Corona".
