Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) was an American paintball tournament promotion company and national competition organiser active from 2001 to 2015. Originally established by promoters producing events sanctioned by the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL), PSP subsequently operated an independent tournament circuit featuring professional and amateur competition.[1][2] PSP was closely associated with the development of X-Ball, the original National Xball League (NXL), and the transition from traditional five-man and 10-man tournament paintball to timed, multi-point speedball matches. Its principal events included the Paintball World Cup, Chicago Open, Mid-Atlantic Open and other national tournaments.[3][4] Its final documented national tournament was the Dallas Open in March 2015. The organisation did not resume its national series following the establishment of a new NXL circuit later that year.[5][6] == History == === Formation and NPPL relationship === Paintball Sports Promotions was established in early 2001 when independent tournament promoters producing events for the National Professional Paintball League combined their operations into a single company.[1] Throughout the 1990s, the NPPL sanctioned tournaments produced by separate promoters, establishing competition rules and standards while the promoters managed the individual events. By 2000, disagreements had emerged concerning tournament quality, league governance, sanctioning fees and the relationship between players and event organisers. The promoters formed PSP to coordinate their activities, pool resources and negotiate collectively with the NPPL. Individuals involved in the organisation during its early years included Jerry Braun, Renick Miller, Dave Youngblood, Richmond Italia and Ed Poorman.[1][2] The combined organisation invested in shared tournament infrastructure, including netting and a compressed-air filling system reportedly costing US$200,000.[1] === Separation from the NPPL === Relations between PSP and the NPPL deteriorated during the 2002 season. Disagreements included sanctioning fees, contracts, control of league committees and the extent of the promoters' accountability to participating teams. In March 2002, PSP announced that it would operate independently of the NPPL. The organisations subsequently reached an agreement allowing the remaining tournaments of that season to retain NPPL sanctioning.[2] Negotiations for the following season were unsuccessful. For 2003, the NPPL launched its independent NPPL Super 7 series, while PSP continued operating five-man and 10-man tournaments and introduced X-Ball competition. Both organisations initially claimed rights to use the NPPL name. PSP subsequently established its separate identity as a national tournament series.[3] === Introduction of X-Ball === The introduction of X-Ball in 2003 represented a major change to PSP competition. Unlike traditional single-game formats, X-Ball used timed matches in which teams could score multiple points through repeated starts and flag captures. The original National Xball League began professional franchise-based X-Ball competition alongside PSP tournaments in 2003.[4] PSP also offered divisional X-Ball competition to teams outside the professional franchise structure, initially alongside its established five-man and 10-man events. The format rapidly attracted participating teams, contributing to the decline of traditional 10-man competition within the PSP national circuit.[4] The 2003 PSP World Cup at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Florida featured five-man, 10-man, divisional X-Ball and professional NXL competition.[4] === Development of the national circuit === Throughout the 2000s, PSP operated a national tournament programme incorporating professional competition, amateur divisions and the Paintball World Cup. The organisation developed its competition formats, tournament infrastructure, refereeing arrangements and event presentation. By 2009, PSP had introduced its RaceTo competition system, with different divisions competing in timed matches to specified winning scores. The 2009 formats included RaceTo 7 for professional competition and shorter RaceTo formats for lower divisions.[7] Although the original franchise-based NXL structure had ended after 2008, PSP continued professional X-Ball competition in 2009. Contemporary tournament coverage sometimes retained the NXL designation, while PSP's published 2009 format announcement identified its professional division as RaceTo 7, formerly NXL.[7][8] PSP also developed live internet coverage of professional matches and expanded its relationships with regional tournament organisations. === Final seasons === PSP continued operating major national tournaments during the early 2010s. Its 2014 schedule included the Dallas Open, Mid-Atlantic Open, Chicago Open, West Coast Open and Paintball World Cup. Competition included professional and divisional RaceTo formats, as well as pump and other tournament categories.[9] The organisation's final documented event was the PSP Dallas Open, held from 13 to 15 March 2015 at Cousins Paintball in Forney, Texas. The tournament attracted 116 teams across eight divisions. Los Angeles Infamous won the professional division, defeating Houston Heat 5β4 in the final.[5][10] The event was affected by heavy rain and deteriorating playing conditions. By May 2015, PSP had suspended its remaining national tournament programme, while a newly organised National Xball League announced its own competition calendar.[6] Discussions took place concerning a possible acquisition of PSP by the new NXL organisation. However, contemporary reporting in May 2015 stated that negotiations had ended without a completed acquisition.[11] The revived NXL subsequently became the principal national professional tournament circuit in the United States. == Competition formats == PSP operated several paintball formats during its history. === Five-man and 10-man === During its early years, PSP continued the traditional tournament formats previously associated with the NPPL. Five-man and 10-man competitions generally used individual games in which teams earned points for eliminations, surviving players and flag objectives. Both formats were contested at the 2003 PSP World Cup, alongside the newer X-Ball divisions.[4] === X-Ball === X-Ball became PSP's principal competition format during the 2000s. Teams competed in timed matches featuring repeated points, with players returning to their starting areas between points. The format supported professional competition and multiple amateur divisions. === RaceTo === PSP subsequently adopted RaceTo formats, in which matches ended when a team reached a specified score or when the allocated game time expired. Different divisions used different score limits and match durations. The system included RaceTo 7, RaceTo 5, RaceTo 4 and RaceTo 2 formats during the organisation's later years.[7] == Major tournaments == Events associated with the PSP national circuit included: * Paintball World Cup: The organisation's major annual season-ending event, generally held in central Florida. * PSP Chicago Open: A recurring national tournament with origins in the earlier NPPL circuit. * PSP Mid-Atlantic Open: A recurring national event held at different venues in the eastern United States. * PSP Dallas Open: A Texas tournament that hosted PSP's final documented event in 2015. * PSP West Coast Open: A tournament included in the organisation's later national calendars. The names, venues and number of tournaments changed between seasons. == Historical records == PSP tournament results and season rankings are preserved through contemporary publications and online registration databases.
