Paintball's Grand Finale is an annual American scenario paintball event held at Wayne's World of Paintball in Ocala, Florida. Organised as the year-end finale of Wayne Dollack's 24-hour role-playing scenario games, the event is known for its fictional storylines, elaborate props, specialised player roles and large-scale woodsball competition. The event has been documented since at least 1997 and became a prominent gathering within American recreational paintball. The December 2000 edition attracted more than 1,200 registered players.[1][2] == History == === Early events === Paintball's Grand Finale developed as the concluding event of Wayne Dollack's annual scenario paintball programme. The event was produced through Florida Paintball Productions, involving Wayne and Jackie Dollack and their associates Ben and Bonnie Toricelli.[2] One of the earliest documented editions was Area 51, held in December 1997. The scenario involved two opposing forces competing over the secrets of a fictional military installation. The event featured an armoured personnel carrier, elaborate science-fiction props and specialised missions. Contemporary coverage by Bill Mills for WARPIG documented a substantial paintball industry trade exhibition, including equipment manufacturers and distributors. The event also included celebrity player missions, a costume competition and prize giveaways.[1] === Fool's Gold (1998) === The December 1998 Grand Finale was titled Fool's Gold. Held from 4 to 6 December, the event featured a fictional conflict involving international criminal organisations and intelligence agencies competing over a process capable of converting lead into gold. Players completed missions involving the collection and exchange of gold bars, with additional objectives involving espionage and financial manipulation. The event attracted nearly 700 players and featured a prize package valued at more than US$40,000.[3] WARPIG documented participation by several major paintball manufacturers, including Tippmann, Worr Game Products, Kingman International, Airgun Designs and Smart Parts.[3] === Battle for Earth (2000) === The December 2000 Grand Finale, titled Battle for Earth, was inspired by the science-fiction novel and film Battlefield Earth. The event involved opposing human and alien forces competing across the Wayne's World playing fields. According to contemporary WARPIG reporting, more than 1,200 players registered for the event, exceeding the attendance records of previous editions. The event included a celebrity mission featuring several notable paintball industry figures, including Bud Orr, Tom Kaye and Ben Tippmann. A Kingman-sponsored costume competition and a paintball industry trade exhibition formed part of the weekend programme.[2] === Later editions === Paintball's Grand Finale continued throughout the 2000s and 2010s. The December 2010 edition was documented in video coverage subsequently published by Social Paintball.[4] The 2013 event, titled Mech Wars, featured a science-fiction conflict between two opposing armies known as Northside and Southside. Gameplay ran from noon on 7 December until noon on 8 December. Northside won the event, finishing with approximately twice the points of Southside.[5] The 2019 event featured a scenario based on the pursuit of Colombian drug trafficker Pablo Escobar, with players representing rival law enforcement and criminal factions.[6] === Recent editions === The 2025 Grand Finale was titled Operation C.I.A.: Conflict in America and took place from 5 to 7 December. The scenario involved American federal agencies attempting to disrupt a fictionalised criminal operation associated with the transnational gang Tren de Aragua.[7] The event remained part of Wayne's World's annual programme, with local reporting in September 2026 confirming preparations for another December gathering.[8] == Game format == Paintball's Grand Finale follows Wayne Dollack's established 24-hour role-playing scenario format. Unlike conventional elimination-based paintball games, participants compete within a fictional storyline featuring multiple objectives, characters and specialist roles. The principal opposing forces are typically led by generals and executive officers who receive missions from the scenario director. Points are accumulated through completing assigned objectives, capturing locations, recovering props and carrying out specialist operations. Players may be assigned roles including spies, intelligence agents, medics, engineers and demolition specialists. The format incorporates mission cards, character identities and interactive props that influence the outcome of the scenario.[9] Although described as a 24-hour event, historical editions have included scheduled breaks for meals and other activities, with night-time gameplay subject to separate safety rules.[1][3] == Role-playing and props == A defining characteristic of Paintball's Grand Finale is its emphasis on role-playing and the use of physical props. These have included fictional identification documents, simulated explosives, specialised vehicles and objects required to complete assigned missions. The official Wayne Dollack scenario rules provide for espionage, prisoner capture, medical treatment, demolition missions and the reconstruction of destroyed structures. Special characters may receive authorisation to undertake actions unavailable to ordinary players, while referees supervise the completion of missions and award points.[9] The event's changing themes have included science fiction, espionage, organised crime and military operations. == Venue == Paintball's Grand Finale takes place at Wayne's World of Paintball in Ocala, Florida. The facility was developed to accommodate large-scale scenario competition, with constructed villages, fortified bases, towers, bridges and other structures supporting themed gameplay. Historical features included a simulated airstrip, helicopter, radar installations and an Incan-style pyramid.[10] The venue also provides space for camping, equipment vendors and event administration. == Paintball industry participation == Paintball's Grand Finale has historically attracted equipment manufacturers, distributors and notable individuals associated with the paintball industry. During the late 1990s, the event incorporated a substantial trade exhibition and prize giveaways supported by numerous manufacturers. The 1998 event included nearly 60 paintball markers among its advertised prizes and equipment giveaways.[3] These activities contributed to the event's role as both a recreational competition and an end-of-season gathering for the paintball community. == Significance == Paintball's Grand Finale is an early and longstanding example of large-scale, story-driven scenario paintball. Its documented history extends from at least 1997 to 2025, with continued event planning reported in 2026. The event is particularly associated with Wayne Dollack's approach to scenario design, incorporating fictional narratives, specialist characters, elaborate props and objectives extending beyond conventional paintball eliminations. The participation of more than 1,200 registered players in 2000 demonstrates its historical scale within American recreational paintball.[2] == See also == * Scenario paintball * Woodsball * Wayne Dollack * Wayne's World of Paintball * SuperGame * Living Legends * Castle Conquest * Oklahoma D-Day == References == # WARPIG β Area 51, Bill Mills, December 1997 # WARPIG β Battle for Earth, December 2000 # WARPIG β Fool's Gold, December 1998 # Social Paintball β Final Battle: 2010 Grand Finale at Wayne's World of Paintball, 6 December 2011 # TJM Promos β Patches for Mech Wars Scenario at Wayne's World of Paintball, 7 January 2014 # Wayne's World of Paintball β Grand Finale 2019, official event information # Wayne's World of Paintball β Operation C.I.A.: Conflict in America, official 2025 event information # Ocala Gazette β Wayne's World of Paintball Gets Extension, Marian Rizzo, 16 September 2026 # Wayne's World of Paintball β Official Rules for 24 Hour Scenario Games # Wayne's World of Paintball β Official Venue Description == External links == * Wayne's World of Paintball official website * Wayne's World event calendar
