Maurice Gibb (22 December 1949 β 12 January 2003), also known in paintball as Commander Mo, was a British musician, tournament paintball player, team founder and paintball business owner. Best known as a member of the Bee Gees, Gibb was active in competitive paintball during the early 2000s, establishing the Royal Rat Rangers tournament team and opening Commander Mo's paintball shop in the Miami area of Florida.[1][2] Gibb competed in American and European tournaments, including the Paintball World Cup and Millennium Series. He also developed plans for an international paintball tournament incorporating live entertainment. Following his death, the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) named its season-ending Commander's Cup in his honour.[3][4][5] == Paintball career == === Early involvement === Gibb's involvement in paintball began during the 1980s. In an interview conducted by Carmen Borgia for the January 2002 edition of Crossfire Magazine, Gibb recalled first playing paintball in 1984 at a recreational field in the Florida Everglades. He described participating in woodland games before temporarily leaving the sport because of his music commitments and the limited availability of playing fields.[1] Gibb subsequently returned to paintball after discussing the sport with his friend Frederic Renucci. The pair researched developments in modern paintball equipment and began playing at Rough and Tough, a Florida paintball facility associated with professional player Pete Bofil of Team Rage.[1] === Royal Rat Rangers === Gibb established the Royal Rat Rangers, a tournament paintball team based in South Florida. The organisation developed from a group of recreational players who regularly practised together. Gibb served as team captain, while Frederic Renucci assisted with the team's organisation.[1] The team competed in novice tournament divisions, with Gibb expressing an ambition to develop the organisation towards higher levels of competition. === 2001 Paintball World Cup === The Royal Rat Rangers made their tournament debut at the 2001 Paintball World Cup in Orlando, Florida. The team's participation is confirmed by contemporary WARPIG tournament schedules, which list the Royal Rat Rangers in professional and amateur 10-player preliminary competition.[3] In his January 2002 interview, Gibb described the World Cup as his team's first tournament and discussed the experience of competing against more established players. He emphasised communication, teamwork and learning from experienced opponents.[1] The Royal Rat Rangers subsequently entered the Pan Am Las Vegas tournament, held from 28 November to 2 December 2001. Official tournament results record the team finishing 11th in the novice 10-player division, with 214 points.[6] === European competition (2002) === In 2002, Gibb and the Royal Rat Rangers competed at the Millennium Series Campaign Cup in London. The event was held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. Contemporary reporting by Simon Stevens for WARPIG identified Gibb as the founder of the Royal Rat Rangers and described the team reaching the semi-finals of the novice division. During one match against JCS Inferno, Gibb completed the flag hang after his team eliminated its opponents.[4] The report also documented Gibb discussing the tournament on radio as part of his efforts to promote the sport. === Beyond 2002 === Gibb participated in the Beyond 2002 extreme sports and music festival at Bicentennial Park in Miami. The event combined paintball competition with skateboarding, motocross and live musical performances. The Royal Rat Rangers were among the 22 paintball teams competing at the festival. Contemporary WARPIG reporting documented Gibb's interest in combining professional paintball with larger entertainment events. Although supportive of the concept, Gibb expressed concern that loud music could interfere with communication between players during matches.[7] == Commander Mo's Paintball Shop == Gibb also operated a paintball equipment business called Commander Mo's Paintball Shop in the Miami area. The business was documented in contemporary obituaries published following his death in January 2003. The Washington Post identified Commander Mo's as a local paintball store owned by Gibb, while The Independent reported that the shop operated near his Miami Beach home.[2][8] The business reflected Gibb's involvement in paintball beyond tournament competition. == Commander's Cup == === Original tournament plans === During 2002, Gibb developed plans for a paintball tournament called the Commander's Cup. His original proposal involved staging a tournament at a Caribbean resort, combining competitive paintball with musical entertainment and other attractions. Contemporary reporting identified the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas as a proposed venue.[7] Gibb discussed the proposal with officials associated with the NPPL and Pure Promotions. The planned Caribbean event was not held during his lifetime. === Memorial tournament (2003) === Following Gibb's death on 12 January 2003, the NPPL and Pure Promotions continued developing the Commander's Cup concept. The inaugural NPPL Super 7 tournament at Huntington Beach in February 2003 was dedicated to his memory.[9] Later that year, the NPPL introduced the Commander's Cup as the final event of its inaugural Super 7 World Series. The first Commander's Cup was held at Tamiami Park in Miami in November 2003. The event incorporated fundraising activities supporting Gibb family charities.[5] Subsequent editions continued using the Commander's Cup name, including tournaments held in San Diego and Miami.[10] == Contribution to paintball == Gibb used his public profile and entertainment industry connections to promote paintball during the early 2000s. His involvement extended beyond recreational participation to include tournament competition, team organisation, equipment retail and event promotion. Contemporary tournament reports document his participation alongside established amateur and professional teams in the United States and Europe. In February 2021, Paintball Media Magazine included Gibb in a historical feature recognising individuals who had contributed to the development and promotion of paintball. The publication highlighted his tournament involvement, paintball business and proposals for large-scale entertainment-oriented paintball events.[11] The Commander's Cup remained a visible part of his association with the sport following his death. == See also == * Royal Rat Rangers * NPPL Super 7 * National Professional Paintball League * Paintball World Cup * Millennium Series * History of tournament paintball == References == # Crossfire Magazine β Q&A with Maurice Gibb.
