Malta Allied Airgunners Club (MAAC) is a Maltese shooting sports organisation established in 2008. Originally focused on air rifle disciplines, the club subsequently expanded to include airsoft and paintball, establishing a dedicated paintball section by February 2010. [1] MAAC played a role in the early development of organised paintball in Malta, including recreational events and the Malta Official Paintball League (MOPL), for which competition results survive from 2011. == History == === Formation and early activities === According to its published organisational history, the Malta Allied Airgunners Club was formed and officially licensed in 2008. Its early activities focused primarily on air rifle sports, including Field Target, Hunter Field Target and Air Rifle Benchrest. [1] The club maintained a training and competition presence at the Victoria Shooters Range in Tal-Ħandaq, near Qormi. A report published by the Times of Malta in September 2008 described MAAC as a recently authorised target-shooting organisation affiliated with the Malta Shooting Sport Federation (MSSF). [2] By November 2008, MAAC was organising regular field target and air pistol competitions. Contemporary newspaper reports identify Stanley Shaw among its competitors. [3] MAAC was also affiliated with the Association of Arms Collectors and Target Shooters (AACTS), which subsequently continued listing the Malta Allied Airgunners Club among its affiliated organisations. [4] === Introduction of paintball === MAAC expanded beyond its original air rifle disciplines to accommodate other sports using compressed-air equipment, including airsoft and paintball. The club's historical website explains that dedicated sections were introduced as interest in additional disciplines developed. [1] On 19 February 2010, MAAC published an introductory post announcing a dedicated website for its paintball section. The announcement explicitly identified the site as belonging to the paintball section of the Malta Allied Airgunners Club. [5] A separate introductory page, signed by chairman Stanley Shaw, described the club's expanded activities and stated that the website would be devoted to paintball. [1] The existence of a dedicated paintball section by February 2010 provides documentary evidence of organised paintball activity within a Maltese shooting sports association. The exact date on which MAAC first began accepting paintball members has not been established. == Paintball activities == === Early recreational events === MAAC's surviving paintball blog includes an event announcement published on 8 February 2010 for an activity titled "Operation RSR", referring to Red Storm Rising. The event was advertised for 19 February 2010 at the Ta' Qali Paintball Field. Promotional material listed five games, rental equipment and 250 paintballs at a price of €28 per participant. [6] The event had an advertised capacity of 20 participants. These materials establish the club's early involvement in arranging organised paintball activities, although the announcement alone does not confirm the final attendance or results. === Malta Official Paintball League === MAAC subsequently became associated with the Malta Official Paintball League (MOPL), an organised domestic paintball competition documented in 2011. A surviving promotional poster advertised an event scheduled for Saturday, 25 June 2011, at Extreme Paintball Range in Ta' Qali. The event was promoted in aid of Puttinu Cares and advertised an eight-team, five-player competition. The poster displayed MAAC, MOPL, Extreme Paintball and KAO$ branding. On 26 June 2011, the MAAC Paint Ball blog published results for the first MOPL series, identifying SDT as the winner. [7] The published results were: {| class="wikitable" ! Position ! Team ! Points |- | 1 | SDT | 1,100 |- | 2 | Kao$ | 860 |- | 3 | SCALA | 380 |- | 4 | MAMALS | 160 |} The records establish organised local competition involving at least four named teams. However, the precise relationship between the published standings and the advertised eight-team event remains unresolved. The surviving results do not establish that all eight advertised teams participated. The competition's title does not independently establish formal recognition as a national championship by a government sporting authority or international paintball federation. === Relationship with local teams === The MAAC paintball section was associated with Malta's emerging community of organised paintball players. KAO$ was among the teams identified in the 2011 MOPL results. The team also maintained a connection with Extreme Paintball (Ta' Qali), where organised paintball activities were held. The surviving records illustrate how established shooting sports organisations provided an administrative and organisational setting for early Maltese paintball teams. The precise membership arrangements, individual player registrations and extent of MAAC's involvement in the management of participating teams remain incompletely documented. == Organisation and affiliations == MAAC's historical website identifies Stanley Shaw as chairman during the development of its paintball section. [1] The club described itself as affiliated with the Malta Shooting Sport Federation and the Association of Arms Collectors and Target Shooters. It also identified sporting affiliations associated with its air rifle disciplines, including the World Field Target Federation and organisations involved in international air rifle benchrest competition. [1] The Association of Arms Collectors and Target Shooters continues to identify MAAC among its affiliated clubs. [4] MAAC should not be confused with the Association of Maltese Arms Collectors & Shooters (AMACS), a separate shooting sports association with its own affiliated clubs. Its paintball section should also be distinguished from the later Valletta Paintball Club and the separately established Malta Paintball voluntary organisation. == Historical significance == The Malta Allied Airgunners Club represents an early documented example of paintball being organised through an established Maltese shooting sports association. Its February 2010 paintball website provides direct evidence of a dedicated organisational structure for the sport. The subsequent Malta Official Paintball League results from June 2011 demonstrate the existence of organised domestic competition involving multiple teams. These records are especially valuable because they predate Malta's later participation in international speedball competitions and the establishment of dedicated national paintball representation. The surviving material does not establish when MAAC ceased organising paintball activities, whether its paintball section continued beyond the documented period, or the complete number of tournaments it organised. == See also == * Paintball in Malta * Malta Official Paintball League * Extreme Paintball (Ta' Qali) * KAO$ Malta Paintball Team * Valletta Paintball Club * Malta Paintball == References == # MAAC Paintball, About.
