Los Angeles Ironmen, also known as the Ironmen, SC Ironmen and DYE Ironmen, is an American professional paintball team whose origins date to 1985. Originally established in Northern California, the Ironmen became one of the leading tournament teams of the late 1980s and 1990s before continuing into modern professional X-Ball competition. [1][2] The team is associated with several prominent figures in paintball history, including Rick Baird, Bob Long, Dave Youngblood, Shane Pestana, Billy Wing and Oliver Lang. Its competitive achievements include National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) championships and consecutive National Xball League (NXL) titles in 2007 and 2008. [2][3][4] == History == === Formation and early years === The Ironmen were established in Northern California in 1985 by Rick Baird, commonly known as General Rick. Several of the original players were ironworkers, providing the inspiration for the team's name. [1][2] Baird organised the team around three five-player squads known as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. This arrangement allowed the Ironmen to compete and practise with different combinations of players. [2] During 1987, Rick Cendejas and Bob Long joined the Ironmen after initially competing together under the name Delta, which was associated with Long's Delta Archery business. Both had previously encountered Baird's team at Michael Leon's Venture Games paintball field near Mount Diablo, California. [2] By the late 1980s, the Ironmen were competing in regional and national tournaments using pump-action paintball markers, including the Line SI Bushmaster. The team received sponsorship from Line SI during this period. [2] === Expansion and championships (1990β1996) === In 1990, the Ironmen merged with another tournament team, Strike Force. The merger was documented in the September 1990 issue of Paintcheck magazine and helped establish the roster that would compete during the early 1990s. [5] The team became closely associated with Worr Game Products (WGP) and the Autococker. In March 1991, the Ironmen participated in the Lone Star Open using early Autococker markers supplied through WGP's sponsorship programme. The team was among the first major tournament organisations to adopt the marker. [6] The Ironmen were successful during the early 1990s, when tournament paintball was transitioning from pump-action equipment to semi-automatic markers. Contemporary photographs and equipment records document players such as Bob Long, Rick Cendejas, Darryl Trent and Dave Youngblood during this period. [2][5][6] In 1994, members of the team received distinctive nickel-plated Ironmen Autocockers. Examples associated with Dave Youngblood and other team members have subsequently been preserved and documented by paintball historians. [7] === The 1996 split === A significant change occurred in late 1996 when Bob Long departed the original Ironmen and assembled a separate professional team known as Bob Long's Ironmen. [8] The original organisation continued competing independently and became associated with Dave Youngblood and Shane Pestana. Contemporary tournament coverage distinguishes the two teams, referring to the original organisation as Dave Youngblood's Ironmen or the Southern California Ironmen, while Long's team competed under his name. [8][9] At the 1998 NPPL Chicago Open, the two Ironmen teams met in tournament competition. WARPIG described the encounter as their first tournament match against each other since the split. [9] === Southern California Ironmen (1997β2002) === The Ironmen continued competing in the NPPL professional 10-man division during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The published 2001 NPPL roster listed Shane Pestana as captain, alongside Kevin Arcilla, Bryon Benini, Marty Bush, Brahim Estephan, Oliver Lang, Matt Marshall, Micah McGlocklin, Yosh Rau, Rich Telford, Davie Williamson and Billy Wing. [10] The team was also involved in the development of competitive playing facilities at SC Village. Brahim Estephan was credited with designing the SC Arenas tournament facility, while Estephan and Pestana were involved in preparing layouts for the 2001 NPPL Los Angeles Open. [11] Following changes to its roster, the Ironmen won the professional 10-man division at the 2002 NPPL Chicago Open in Crete, Illinois. The tournament included a match against Bob Long's Ironmen, which the Southern California team won. [12] At the end of the 2002 season, the Southern California Ironmen and San Diego Dynasty finished tied for first place in the NPPL professional 10-man standings, both earning 229 ranking points. The series organisers recognised the teams as joint champions. [13] === Los Angeles Ironmen and the X-Ball era === The Ironmen subsequently competed under the Los Angeles Ironmen name, becoming closely associated with DYE Precision, the paintball equipment company founded by Dave Youngblood. The team continued competing in professional X-Ball during the 2000s, including in the PSP/NXL championship structure. In 2007, the Los Angeles Ironmen won the NXL championship at the PSP World Cup in Florida. The championship was decided in a best-of-three final against Boston Red Legion. After losing the opening match, the Ironmen won the following two games, including a 7β6 victory in the deciding match. [14] The team successfully defended its championship in 2008, defeating the Philadelphia Americans in the final. The deciding match ended 9β4 in favour of Los Angeles, giving the Ironmen consecutive NXL titles. [15] These victories represented another major championship period for an organisation whose origins predated modern X-Ball competition. === Later years === The Ironmen continued competing in professional paintball following the 2008 championship season. The organisation maintained its relationship with DYE Precision, competing under the DYE Ironmen identity and using the manufacturer's equipment. Billy Wing, a former player and longstanding figure within the organisation, remained involved in its leadership and operations. [16] The Ironmen continued to operate as a professional paintball organisation in the 2020s, with the team and DYE documenting their historical relationship in January 2026. [16] == Notable players == Players associated with significant periods of Ironmen history include: * Rick Baird β Original team founder and captain. * Bob Long β Early Ironmen player and later founder of Bob Long's Ironmen. * Rick Cendejas β Early player involved in the team's Northern California development. * Dave Youngblood β Longstanding Ironmen player and founder of DYE Precision. * Shane Pestana β Captain during the team's later NPPL 10-man period. * Marty Bush β Member of the early Ironmen organisation. * Darryl Trent β Prominent Ironmen player during the early 1990s. * Brahim Estephan β Professional player involved in the development of SC Arenas. * Billy Wing β Player and later team management figure. * Rich Telford β Professional player and team leader during the early 2000s. * Oliver Lang β Professional player during multiple periods of Ironmen history. During the late 1980s, the team used Line SI Bushmaster pump markers. By 1991, the Ironmen had become an early sponsored team for the WGP Autococker, helping establish the marker within national tournament competition. [2][6] The team's later association with DYE Precision connected its professional playing programme with the development, testing and promotion of paintball markers, barrels, protective equipment and accessories. [16] == Legacy == The Ironmen are among the longest-established names in American competitive paintball. Their history spans the early woodland tournament era, the emergence of semi-automatic markers, NPPL professional 10-man competition and modern X-Ball. [2][3] Their 1996 division also represents an important distinction in professional paintball history, as the original Ironmen and Bob Long's Ironmen subsequently competed as separate organisations. [8][9] The team's history has been documented through contemporary tournament reports, equipment archives, player recollections and historical photography.
